Cross your fingers, Lubbock, but we may be out of the woods.<\/p>\n

Have you ever noticed when someone says, \u201cI\u2019m not superstitious, but\u2026\u201d they\u2019re absolutely about to say something superstitious? That\u2019s me right now. I want to talk about tornado season without somehow angering the weather gods into dropping a funnel cloud in the middle of town. So yes, maybe I\u2019m just a little superstitious.<\/p>\n

Still, the calendar says we may finally be moving out of the danger zone. Around the South Plains, tornado season generally runs from about mid-April through mid-June, and here we are\u00a0past the end of that stretch. Of course, tornadoes can happen anytime the conditions line up just right, but statistically this is the period when we usually keep one eye on the sky.<\/p>\n

A Quiet Tornado Season For Lubbock<\/p>\n

Lubbock <\/a>actually averages about one tornado a year, and 2026 may end up coming in under that average. Compared to last year\u2019s June 5th outbreak \u2014 when multiple tornadoes came close enough to trigger the warning sirens \u2014 this season has felt relatively calm.<\/p>\n

That feeling may not just be in our heads, either. Statistics show tornado activity around Lubbock has declined compared to decades past, with the 1970s ranking among the most active tornado decades in the area. Unfortunately, that decade also included the devastating May 11th, 1970 tornado that changed Lubbock forever.<\/p>\n

Now Comes The Heat<\/p>\n

So far, so good. If we\u2019re lucky, we may be heading into a long, brutally hot West Texas summer without a major tornado event this year. Honestly, I\u2019ll gladly take\u00a0heat over hail and\/or tornados.<\/p>\n

At the same time, there\u2019s always that little human instinct to think we\u2019re somehow \u201coverdue\u201d for bad weather, even though science doesn\u2019t really work that way. Tornadoes don\u2019t keep score. Sometimes nature just gives us a quiet year, and maybe this is one of them.<\/p>\n

For now, I think most of us are perfectly happy to say we made it through another tornado season with our homes, families, pets, and trampolines still intact.<\/p>\n
