{"id":310114,"date":"2026-05-27T02:54:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T02:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/310114\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T02:54:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T02:54:07","slug":"el-paso-chamber-fights-plan-to-reroute-commercial-trucks-from-bridge-of-the-americas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/310114\/","title":{"rendered":"El Paso Chamber fights plan to reroute commercial trucks from Bridge of the Americas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EL PASO, TEXAS (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 The Greater El Paso Chamber of Commerce is pushing back against plans to redirect commercial traffic away from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsa.gov\/real-estate\/ongoing-construction-projects\/bridge-of-the-americas-land-port-of-entry?gsaredirect=BOTA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bridge of the Americas<\/a>, warning the change could weaken a key trade corridor and threaten jobs tied to cross-border commerce.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed shift is part of the General Services Administration\u2019s modernization project, which the agency finalized last May. <\/p>\n<p>Chamber CEO and President Ricardo Mora said removing commercial traffic from the Bridge of the Americas would make the region less competitive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf commercial traffic is removed from Bridge of the Americas, which is one of the ports on the El Paso sector, we would be less competitive,\u201d Mora said.<\/p>\n<p>Mora said the chamber is contacting federal officials to oppose the change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why the chamber today is talking to our representatives at the federal level,\u201d Mora said. \u201cWe\u2019re defending commerce for our community that highly relies on cross-border trade and we\u2019re doing this for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/kfoxtv.com\/news\/local\/el-paso-officials-defend-bota-modernization-plan-as-chamber-warns-of-trade-fallout-texas-tx-bridge-of-the-americas-county-david-stout-josh-acevedo-chris-canales-lily-limon?SRC=LINK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">El Paso officials defend BOTA modernization plan as Chamber warns of trade fallout<\/a><\/p>\n<p>He also argued the region should be expanding, not reducing, cross-border infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe should be building more cross-border trade instead of eliminating,\u201d Mora said. \u201cWhen you eliminate this infrastructure, it will not come back for the next 15 to 20 years if we start working on it now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chamber\u2019s stance comes amid criticism from local leaders. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/elpasomatters.org\/2026\/05\/20\/opinion-bota-bridge-americas-port-of-entry-el-paso-texas-chamber-commerce\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">El Paso Matters<\/a> published an opinion piece from city and county leaders accusing the chamber of working behind the scenes to slow or reverse progress on the project, including hiring a lobbyist with access to high-level administration officials.<\/p>\n<p>Rep. Lily Limon, who represents East El Paso and the Lower Valley, said, \u201cAfter all the efforts that were taken and after all the research and investigation and the voices of the people, it appears like the Chamber of Commerce is now going behind our backs and trying to have the GSA pull this funding about. That is the real concern on this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked about those claims, Mora denied the chamber was using back channels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo talking about the chamber going through back channels, I would have to tell you that that is not true,\u201d Mora said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the chamber has been communicating openly with elected officials, including U.S. Sens. John Cornyn and Ted Cruz and U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have spoken with Senator Cornyn, we have spoken with Senator Cruz, we have spoken to Representative Veronica Escobar, to other representatives, we\u2019ve been in Washington, the chamber advocates for better conditions for businesses,\u201d Mora said.<\/p>\n<p>Mora said the potential impact could be significant for the local economy, pointing to manufacturing jobs in particular.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday that means, and that\u2019s in the manufacturing sector alone, that is about 110,000 jobs in El Paso that will be affected by the closure of an important artery that will take decades to rebuild,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE: <a href=\"https:\/\/kfoxtv.com\/news\/local\/gsa-finalizes-bridge-of-the-americas-project-excludes-commercial-trucks?src=link?SRC=LINK\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">GSA finalizes Bridge of the Americas project; excludes commercial trucks<\/a><\/p>\n<p>City and county leaders have continued to support the modernization project, citing the risk of losing federal funding if the effort is delayed. <\/p>\n<p>Commissioner David Stout, who represents Central and South Central El Paso, said May 22, \u201cIf this project, is delayed by any by any reason or for any reason. We have been told we\u2019ve been advised that, this, the money will go somewhere else.
