{"id":310637,"date":"2026-05-27T11:14:09","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T11:14:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/310637\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T11:14:09","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T11:14:09","slug":"texas-security-camera-laws-can-neighbors-record-your-property","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/310637\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas security camera laws: Can neighbors record your property?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/article\/is-it-illegal-to-park-in-front-of-house-texas-21369481.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Home security<\/a> cameras are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/article\/texas-abandoned-car-laws-towing-rules-22228135.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">legal <\/a>in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/news\/article\/is-it-legal-to-sleep-car-texas-rest-area-highway-21959077.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Texas<\/a>, but there are limits on what neighbors can record and where cameras can be pointed.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what Texas law says about surveillance cameras, privacy and recording neighbors.<\/p>\n<p>Texas law prohibits invasive visual recording in places where someone has a reasonable expectation of privacy.<\/p>\n<p>Under Texas Penal Code \u00a7 21.15, it is a crime to intentionally record another person\u2019s intimate areas without consent in private spaces where people would reasonably expect privacy while undressing.<\/p>\n<p>That includes places such as:<\/p>\n<p>A security camera aimed into those areas could potentially violate state law.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Texas State Law Library, privacy expectations in a backyard depend largely on visibility.<\/p>\n<p>The more visible an area is from public view, the weaker the expectation of privacy becomes.<\/p>\n<p>Legal site NOLO gives this example: \u201cThe easier it is for the public to see into the space in question, the less the expectation of privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A camera capturing a front yard from next door is generally unlikely to create legal issues. But intentionally placing a camera to peer over a tall fence or directly into secluded spaces could raise privacy concerns.<\/p>\n<p>NOLO notes that fenced backyards are generally considered more private than open front yards, while the inside of a home is almost always viewed as private.<\/p>\n<p>Recording video in public places is typically legal in Texas.
