The Austin-born chain built its reputation on full meals delivered directly to your seat and an uncompromising stance on theater etiquette. Talk during a movie or check your phone, and you get kicked out.<\/p>\n<p>Now, many loyal fans say that magic is fading.<\/p>\n<p>The change has frustrated longtime patrons who see the new system as fundamentally at odds with the chain\u2019s identity. Now, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/reinstate-alamo-drafthouse-s-no-phone-use-policy\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a petition<\/a> launched by film critic\u00a0Brint Davy is calling on the company to reconsider the move. More than 7,000 people have signed it.<\/p>\n<p>For years, the chain cultivated a sense that movies deserved complete attention and that audiences shared a collective responsibility to protect the experience. Whispering could earn a warning. Texting could get you removed.<\/p>\n<p>That mythology became part of the brand. At Alamo, the expectation was simple: Once the movie started, the outside world disappeared.<\/p>\n<p>The new ordering system complicates that idea. Guests are now asked to engage with the same devices the theater once treated as the enemy of immersion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne minute I\u2019m ordering a Dr Pepper, and the next I\u2019ve accidentally seen a terrifying\u00a0Nextdoor notification about a porch poacher,\u201d Davy wrote in the petition. \u201cThe theater is supposed to be an escape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others signing the petition pointed to the irony of the theater\u2019s longtime pre-show warning: \u201cKeep your devices dark, silent, and out of sight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For longtime Alamo fans, the change feels symbolic. The old system offered uninterrupted hours where nothing outside the theater mattered.
