Pool\/The Dallas Morning News<\/p>\n<p>WASHINGTON \u2013 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/trump-celebrates-ken-paxton-win-over-john-cornyn-22278579.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Texas Senate brawl<\/a> roared into the next round Wednesday, with Republicans trying to heal and Democrats smelling opportunity.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/ken-paxton\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ken\u00a0Paxton&#8217;s<\/a> allies already were working to repair party fractures after the Trump-endorsed attorney general\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/senate-gop-runoff-with-john-cornyn-and-ken-paxton-22272579.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">steamrolled Sen. John Cornyn<\/a> to capture the party\u2019s Senate nomination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Democratic Senate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/spring-break-ends-james-talarico-senate-fight-22277194.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">contender James Talarico<\/a>, meanwhile, was courting disaffected Republicans and independents, warning that Paxton represents a broken and corrupt political system.<\/p>\n<p>And\u00a0Paxton\u2019s campaign, looking to the faceoff with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/talarico-tells-graduates-turn-faith-action-push-22234979.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Talarico<\/a>, moved quickly to air a new attack ad accusing him of pushing a liberal agenda out of step with Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The rapid escalation showed Texas shifting from a divisive primary to a high-stakes general election centered as much on the candidates\u2019 personalities, backgrounds and ethics as policy.<\/p>\n<p>Make Dallas News a preferred source so your search results prioritize writing by actual people, not AI.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=dallasnews.com\" data-link=\"native\" role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Add Preferred Source\" class=\"td300 cp f aic jcc disabled:cd wsn px24 y40px px16 py8 buttonSm fs13 xs:fs16 xs:buttonLg bg-primaryAccessible hover:o80 c-white disabled:bg-gray300 disabled:c-gray600 border bn tac br2\"><\/p>\n<p>Add Preferred Source<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/topic\/donald-trump\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a> weighed in, pledging to campaign for him in Texas and deriding\u00a0Talarico as too extreme.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>To win in November,\u00a0Paxton needs to bring together the different parts of the GOP, including the traditional Bush-era Republicans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/john-cornyn-presses-forward-trump-endorses-rival-22268802.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">whose preferred candidate<\/a> he just walloped.<\/p>\n<p>A victorious\u00a0Paxton said Tuesday night he wants to earn the support of Texans who didn\u2019t back him in the first round.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe future of Texas and the future of America is on the line and I intend to do everything I can to expand our movement,\u201d he told supporters in\u00a0Plano.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/know-john-cornyn-ken-paxton-ahead-gop-senate-22274774.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cornyn<\/a>, in his concession in Austin, said he would support \u201cthe Republican ticket\u201d this fall but avoided explicitly endorsing Paxton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s difficult to imagine Paxton and Cornyn sharing a stage anytime soon, given the two men have spent the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/texas-senate-gop-runoff-features-vicious-ads-22259159.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">past year sparring viciously<\/a>. Cornyn and his allies spent massive sums to publicly excoriate Paxton as an unethical crook and wanton philanderer, spotlighting allegations Paxton has denied.<\/p>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., supported Cornyn but said Wednesday on conservative Hugh Hewitt\u2019s show that Texas Republicans have spoken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKen\u00a0Paxton is our nominee heading into November, and we\u2019ve got to pivot and go all in to make sure that we keep Texas red,\u201d\u00a0Thune said.<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Greg Abbott and Sen. Ted Cruz, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/gov-greg-abbott-says-won-t-endorse-cornyn-vs-22259337.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">both stayed clear of the runoff clash<\/a>, were among the prominent Texas Republicans who quickly endorsed Paxton and urged the party to come together behind his nomination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA united Republican Party will drive victory,\u201d Abbott said. \u201cTogether, we will crush socialist Democrats\u2019 dream of turning Texas blue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of\u00a0Paxton\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/cornyn-hammers-attorney-general-ken-paxton-plea-22265133.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fiercest critics<\/a> also called for unity after the votes were counted, including state Rep. Jeff Leach of Plano, who had campaigned with Cornyn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe Republicans must quickly heal and unite from these bruising primaries \u2014 and I promise to do my part to help make that happen,\u201d Leach said on X.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico at his primary victory party March 3 in Austin.\" loading=\"lazy\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:3 \/ 2\" class=\"x100 y100 opc bgpc ofcv bgscv block bg-gray200 mnh0px fill\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico at his primary victory party March 3 in Austin.<\/p>\n<p>John Moore\/TNS<\/p>\n<p>Healing wounds<\/p>\n<p>The fence mending could take time after the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the GOP campaign arm responsible for electing Republicans, worked closely with Cornyn during the primary to trash Paxton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0NRSC released a statement Tuesday night that made no mention of the attorney general but said, \u201cA state President Trump won by nearly 14 points isn\u2019t going to elect James Talarico.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0NRSC tech team, meanwhile, was scrubbing the internet of the organization\u2019s past statements and ads slamming Paxton, while gleeful Paxton opponents shared on social media various screenshots and video clips of the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>The bigger challenge for Republicans may be what comes next.<\/p>\n<p>The party controlling the White House often struggles in midterm elections, and Democrats view\u00a0Paxton as vulnerable because of years of alleged professional and personal misconduct.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Trump has demonstrated his firm control of the GOP, but his name will not appear on the November ballot, which could hurt turnout among his most ardent fans.<\/p>\n<p>Pivoting to general\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One way to unify a party is to focus on the opponent.<\/p>\n<p>Paxton and other Republicans have been posting a barrage of Talarico clips of his past statements they say demonstrate he is too far left for the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Paxton campaign released an ad highlighting past Talarico comments about the existence of six biological sexes, describing the American flag as a complicated symbol and suggesting meat consumption should be reduced for environmental reasons.<\/p>\n<p>The ad accuses\u00a0Talarico of being too \u201cradical\u201d to represent the state and portrays the Trump-backed Paxton as quintessentially Texas.<\/p>\n<p>Talarico has said he regrets some of his more provocative and cringey statements, but accused Republicans of drawing attention to them as cover for Paxton\u2019s misdeeds.<\/p>\n<p>In social media posts and in interviews,\u00a0Talarico has sought to appeal to Republicans and independents who are disillusioned with the GOP and balking at supporting Paxton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>During an interview on MS NOW,\u00a0Talarico said Paxton is \u201cmorally unfit\u201d for office, the most corrupt attorney general of our lifetime who puts his own interests over the laws of the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose aren\u2019t my words. Those are the words of Ken\u00a0Paxton\u2019s fellow Republicans,\u201d Talarico said. \u201cThis November, working Texans \u2014 Democrats, independents and Republicans alike \u2014 are going to come together to defeat the most corrupt politician in America and the broken political system that he represents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Talarico announced \u201cThe People vs Ken Paxton Tour\u201d during which he plans to barnstorm through five cities, including a Monday stop in Plano.<\/p>\n<p>Raising money<\/p>\n<p>Paxton was heavily outspent by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/news\/politics\/article\/john-cornyn-reports-campaign-finance-numbers-22259146.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cornyn during the primary<\/a>, and it remains unclear whether he can build the kind of fundraising operation needed for a costly general election campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Talarico has shown he can rake in small-dollar contributions, and national Democrats keen to exploit Paxton\u2019s vulnerabilities could chip in significantly.<\/p>\n<p>During his victory speech,\u00a0Paxton encouraged supporters to send money to help fight back in the general election.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know how critical it is for our party to come together, and that&#8217;s what we must do now,\u201d\u00a0Paxton said. \u201cWithout a shadow of a doubt, I will be the Democrats&#8217; number one target in November.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Sen.
