Wylie East High School Principal Tiffany Doolan told the district on May 26 that she would resign.<\/p>\n

WYLIE, Texas \u2014 Wylie ISD has accepted the resignation of a high school principal after controversy struck one of the district\u2019s campuses<\/a> on Feb. 2.<\/p>\n

Wylie East High School Principal Tiffany Doolan told the district on May 26 that she would step down after 18 years with the district.<\/p>\n

This comes after what the district has dubbed the \u201cWhy Islam\u201d incident, when an outside religious organization distributed materials on campus without district approval, per previous WFAA reporting. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom the beginning, the district acknowledged that the situation should never have occurred and that serious mistakes were made,\u201d the district said in a May 28 statement. \u201cThe district, Board of Trustees, and campus leadership publicly apologized, accepted responsibility for the procedural failure, and took immediate action to address the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the statement, the district said it does not promote religion, politics or ideology.<\/p>\n

\u201cWylie ISD also rejects any claim that the district was dishonest or misleading regarding the events of Feb. 2,\u201d the statement said. \u201cAssertions that the district intentionally promoted a religion, attempted to hide facts, or failed to address the matter are false.\u201d<\/p>\n

Outside voices and national political narratives have attempted to distort facts, sow division, or damage the trust built with the community, according to the district.<\/p>\n

\u201cExaggerated claims and inaccurate characterizations of what occurred have escalated tensions while failing to reflect the full context of the situation, the values of our local community, or the reality of daily life inside our schools,\u201d the district said. \u201cOver time, the criticism has become increasingly personal, evolving into targeted online attacks and public hostility directed at Mrs. Doolan.\u201d<\/p>\n

Photos have circulated online showing Doolan wearing a hijab during prior student-led World Hijab Day activities on campus.<\/p>\n

\u201cLike many educators, Mrs. Doolan participated in student activities intended to build relationships and help students feel seen and valued,\u201d the district said. \u201cThose photos have now been reframed through the lens of the unrelated procedural failure and inaccurately portrayed as evidence that Mrs. Doolan or Wylie ISD promoted a religion or political ideology. That characterization is false.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wylie ISD has received numerous messages expressing sadness over Doolan\u2019s departure from the district, according to the statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose who know Tiffany Doolan know her character, her heart for students, and her dedication to public education,\u201d the district said. \u201c\u2026 a procedural mistake should not result in months of harassment, intimidation, misinformation, profanity-laced phone calls and emails, or coordinated efforts to destroy an educator’s reputation and livelihood.
