<\/p>\nNorth Texas law enforcement is ramping up security ahead of the FIFA World Cup, with officials warning of a surge rivaling nine Super Bowls.<\/p>\n
ARLINGTON, Texas \u2014 The signs are hard to miss. Workers have been busy changing the signage at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, and with the FIFA World Cup just weeks away, so is the security planning across North Texas.<\/p>\n
Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn is projecting confidence heading into what he’s calling an unprecedented challenge for the region.<\/p>\n

“We’re told it’s going to be like nine Super Bowls, we could get 3 million visitors, so we are prepared on every level,” Waybourn said.<\/p>\n
That Texas hospitality, he said, comes with a clear warning for anyone looking to cause problems.<\/p>\n
“And if those chuckle heads try to do something, we will come after them,” Waybourn said.<\/p>\n
Governor Greg Abbott was in Arlington to highlight his public safety plan, and the World Cup factored into the conversation. Asked how massive international events shape his thinking on public safety, Abbott pointed to a multi-agency approach the state has used before.<\/p>\n
“Whenever we have these large events like the FIFA Cup, as well as we did this when Super Bowls took place at the Dallas Cowboy Football Stadium, we have a surge of resources at all levels,” Abbott said.<\/p>\n
That surge, he said, means state, local and federal agencies working in coordination. Abbott also flagged human trafficking as a specific concern when millions of people descend on a region.<\/p>\n
“And so we’re working in particular to focus on human trafficking crimes to prevent them from occurring in the first place, and to make arrests of anybody involved,” Abbott said.<\/p>\n
The scale of what’s coming is already visible on the ground.
