LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A new data center is now open in Central Lubbock. The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon on the facilities near 19th and Avenue Q this morning.<\/p>\n
The two Duos Edge AI facilities are million dollar \u201cedge\u201d facilities – which means they are small, decentralized computing centers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThey\u2019re built to be exactly the same. The security, the infrastructure, it\u2019s all built to be the same as a large data center,\u201d Bill Radford, Duos Edge AI\u2019s Vice President of Technology, said. \u201cFrom a footprint perspective, it\u2019s designed to be as non-impactful to the community as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n
Radford said the facility doesn\u2019t need any water. Instead, it\u2019s cooled by air conditioning.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have zero water usage policy, so there\u2019s no water meter, there\u2019s no pipes, there\u2019s nothing,\u201d Radford said. \u201cThe air conditioners on the end are like the air conditioners in your home. They\u2019re just more higher powered. They don\u2019t use water for cooling towers or anything. In fact, when they\u2019re running and they\u2019re pulling humidity out of air, we\u2019re technically generating water right out of thin air.\u201d<\/p>\n
Radford said the facility also doesn\u2019t require much energy. The max capacity is 200 kilowatts, Radford said that\u2019s about the same a McDonald\u2019s uses.<\/p>\n
He added that Duos tries to connect as close to the power grid as possible, to avoid burdening its neighbors with energy costs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s the part that most of the communities are concerned about the most: that cost ends up getting split among everybody instead of just the [data center],\u201d Radford said. \u201cSo, for us, we try and get close to the power grid itself as close as we can because we like to pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n
Inside the building, there are 15 cabinets available for companies and organizations to rent. Duos leases the land from Lubbock ISD and offered free space to area school districts.<\/p>\n
Customers and phone companies bring their own equipment to place in the cabinets.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur model is space power and cross-connects,\u201d Radford said. \u201cThat means we give them the cabinet to put their equipment in, we give them conditioned power to put their equipment in, and we connect them to the local phone company in the building so that they get their fast connection. That\u2019s our entire business model.\u201d<\/p>\n
Radford said Lubbock expressed the most interest of all the cities in Texas.<\/p>\n
Duos Edge AI has opened facilities in Corpus Christi, Victoria, Amarillo and Waco. The company has three more open houses scheduled in June and two more in July, all in Texas. The company also has plans to expand into Georgia, starting in Savannah.<\/p>\n
Radford says it\u2019s the company\u2019s goal to be good stewards of local resources.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was just part of our mantra from the very beginning,\u201d Radford said. \u201cJust do no harm, you know, and try and do the best we can to bring benefit to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
