200 originally built functioning ones in the world.<\/a> Photomatica’s revitalization efforts are keeping the analog experience alive, with the photo booth company having more than 250 machines working across the country.\u00a0<\/p>\nThe vintage machines act like a mini dark room, an all-in-one snap and develop machine. The strips are moved through a series of different tanks that expose them to different chemicals, producing back and white film photo strips. The whole process takes two and a half to three minutes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

“The cool thing about this museum is that you are going to be able to experience every type of photo booth,” Schmidt said.<\/p>\n

Along with the traditional skinny film strips with four photos, there will be wider strips with fewer snapped photos. The museum will also bring a re-engineered color analog booth to the Houston museum. Color photo booths were available in the past, but in 2009, the paper you needed for the photos to be rendered stopped production. The engineers at Photomatica re-engineered a brand new process so that the machine can use new paper.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Visiting the still under-construction space, the charm and vintage aesthetic immediately jumped out. The vintage vibes and look were curated with the help of two set designers, Sabrina Harrison and Charlotte Lederer, who designed both their Los Angeles location and new Houston location.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The vibes are really just kind of inspired by vintage pieces, and because really all of these machines that we have are truly vintage pieces that we have restored,” Schmidt said. “We wanted a fun color palette that would kind of go with the Houston vibe and just be this really cool place for people to hang out and enjoy our booths.”\u00a0<\/p>\n
There is a growing demand for photo booths, and it makes sense. People want those tactile things they can touch and feel, and photos are something where that has been lost due to smartphones. According to Schmidt, young women especially are seeking out these experiences, creating something more meaningful and nostalgic through film.<\/p>\n

“It’s so rare these days to have a physical, tangible photograph in your hands,” Schmidt shared. “I think it’s just a huge draw.”<\/p>\n
