ABC has ordered a new Grey\u2019s Anatomy spinoff set in rural West Texas, marking the fourth series in the franchise and the first not set\u00a0on the West Coast.<\/p>\n
The untitled drama comes from co-creators Shonda Rhimes and Meg Marinis. It will focus<\/a> on a team working at a rural medical center described as \u201cthe last chance for care before miles of nowhere.\u201d<\/p>\n The show also breaks from franchise tradition by centering on an entirely new group of doctors rather than spinning off an established character from the original series. Previous offshoots, Private Practice and Station 19,\u00a0were built around characters already introduced on \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI am incredibly excited to expand the Grey\u2019s Anatomy universe,\u201d Marinis said, per Deadline. \u201cThis opportunity will bring new characters and stories to life that will embody the same heart, emotion and connection audiences have loved from Grey\u2019s for more than two decades \u2014 all set in my home state of Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n Marinis, a Houston native and University of Texas graduate, has worked on \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d for two decades and currently serves as showrunner.<\/p>\n Rhimes, Marinis, Betsy Beers, and Ellen Pompeo will executive produce the series for Shondaland and 20th Television.<\/p>\n While the new show will focus on new characters, it is expected to maintain ties to the larger \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d universe, potentially through existing characters such as Catherine Fox, played by Debbie Allen.<\/p>\n The spinoff is expected to debut during ABC\u2019s midseason 2027 schedule and could receive a limited first-season order similar to other recent ABC dramas.<\/p>\n The project marks the first \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d franchise episode written or co-written by Rhimes since the show\u2019s Season 11 episode \u201cHow to Save a Life,\u201d which featured the death of Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey.<\/p>\n Following the announcement, former \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d actress Leven Rambin publicly expressed<\/a> interest in joining the series, Us Magazine reported.<\/p>\n Rambin, who played Sloan Riley, reacted on Instagram by saying, \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy Texas spin-off? Are you kidding me?\u201d before adding, \u201cThis needs to happen. This is perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n
