Are minibikes legal in Texas?<\/a><\/p>\nBut members of the local mini bike community say the machines represent more than transportation or recreation.<\/p>\n
For some riders, the hobby has become a source of friendship, support and even recovery from addiction.<\/p>\n
“Me personally, I just use it as a getaway,” local rider and organizer Cors told 3NEWS. “I used to be a bad alcoholic, and, man, I bought a mini bike. I haven’t drank in ten years. This is an escape to get better.”<\/p>\n
Cors’ wife, Athena, declined an on-camera interview but told 3NEWS she views riding as a healthier outlet after struggling with narcotics addiction.<\/p>\n
Others in the community shared similar experiences.<\/p>\n
“I went through a really dark place about, like, two years ago,” rider Joe G. said. “I was just inside a whole depression. Yeah, I was going down the wrong path, but I got into mini bikes again. And once you just get outside, you just forget about all your problems about life, and it’s just a relaxation itself.”<\/p>\n
The group gathers regularly for what members call “Sunday Funday” at Snapka’s Drive Inn on Weber Road.<\/p>\n
Riders say the meetups have helped create a close-knit community that extends beyond the bikes themselves.<\/p>\n
“We all met each other because of this,” Joe G. said. “We look out for each other, we call each other when the people are going home, make sure you get home okay. If somebody needs a part, we call each other. We all try to help each other to get back on the road.”<\/p>\n
Still, riders acknowledge safety concerns surrounding the hobby. One rider who attended Sunday’s gathering continues to ride despite losing two fingers in a previous accident.<\/p>\n
Mini bikes generally are not legal to operate on public roads in Texas unless they meet requirements for registration and street-legal equipment.<\/p>\n
Members of the riding community say they would like to see more opportunities or designated places where they can ride legally.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Corpus Christi police say they will continue enforcing existing state laws.<\/p>\n
During Sunday’s gathering at Snapka’s, 3NEWS observed multiple police units positioned nearby. However, no citations were issued and no bikes were impounded.<\/p>\n
Lt. Weisenburger, who supervises the enforcement unit involved in recent operations, declined an on-camera interview but said officers had no reason to take action.<\/p>\n
“They did it right by putting them in the trucks and the trailers,” Weisenburger told 3NEWS. “They gave us no reason to go over there. They didn’t do anything illegal.”<\/p>\n
He added that officers are not looking to create conflict with riders but will enforce violations when they occur.<\/p>\n
Sunday’s event ended without incident, illustrating what both riders and police acknowledged: when mini bikes stay off public streets, there is little for law enforcement to address.<\/p>\n
