Bullard drops Game 1 to Calallen in 8 innings<\/p>\n

BUDA \u2013 Bullard will need two wins on Saturday to keep its season alive.<\/p>\n

No. 1 Corpus Christi Calallen rallied to force extra innings and ended up taking a 4-3 win over the Panthers in eight innings in Game 1 of a Class 4A Division 1 state semifinal baseball series Friday night at Moe and Gene Johnson High School.<\/p>\n

Game 2 of the series will be at 2 p.m. Saturday back at Buda Johnson. A Game 3 would follow, if necessary.<\/p>\n

Drayson Gamez drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the first and moved to third on a double by Drayton Mitchell off the top of the wall. A sacrifice fly by Blake Quinn scored Gamez to give Calallen a 1-0 lead.<\/p>\n

Ethan Foster drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the first for the Panthers. Ty Rigsby then followed with his 10th home run of the season to give Bullard a 2-1 lead. Bryce Roberts was hit by a pitch and went to third on an error on a pickoff attempt. Roberts scored on an RBI double by Gage Alderman with two outs to make the score 3-1.<\/p>\n

Dallin DeBallas led off the second with a single, and Aidan Flores had a double to give the Wildcats two runners in scoring position with one out. Kage Korenek got Carson Klostermann to strike out and then Reese Rusher popped up in foul territory, where Korenek rushed over and made a sliding grab for the third out.<\/p>\n

Collier Carroll struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the second before Korenek singled. Ethan Foster then grounded into a fielder\u2019s choice to end the inning.<\/p>\n

Gamez led off the third with a single but was quickly erased as Mitchell grounded into a 4-6-3 double play. After Quinn singled, Wyatt Dyke flew out to center to end the frame.<\/p>\n

Carroll retired the Panthers in order in the bottom of the third.<\/p>\n

Calallen had two baserunners reach on errors in the fourth inning, but Korenek struck out the other three batters he faced.<\/p>\n

Carroll had Bullard go three up and three down in the bottom of the fourth.<\/p>\n

Korenek walked the first three batters he faced in the fifth inning. But with the bases loaded and his pitch count rising, Korenek struck out the next two batters and then got Jagger Batek to ground into a fielder\u2019s choice to strand the bases loaded and keep the score at 3-1 with 106 pitches.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Carroll mixed in a walk to Foster in between three strikeouts in the bottom of the fifth.<\/p>\n

Korenek retired the first two hitters in the top of the sixth inning before hitting his pitch limit for the series with 112 pitches. Evan Downing took over on the mound for the Panthers. Calallen got RBI singles by Mitchell and Quinn to tie the score at 3-3. Gavin Skaggs came in and struck out Duke to keep the game tied.<\/p>\n

Carroll struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth but also hit his pitch limit with 111 pitches.<\/p>\n

Calallen loaded the bases in the top of the seventh. A force out at second kept the game tied.<\/p>\n

Freshman Jimmy Tipton III came in and retired Bullard in order in the bottom of the seventh to force extra innings.<\/p>\n

Mitchell led off the eighth with a walk and eventually scored on an RBI single by Duke to take a 4-3 lead.<\/p>\n

Foster had a one-out single in the bottom of the eighth for Bullard. Rigsby had a deep drive to right field, but Mitchell sprinted over to make the catch. Tipton got Roberts to ground into a fielder\u2019s choice to end the game.<\/p>\n

Kage Korenek, Foster, Rigsby and Alderman all had a hit for the Panthers (28-11).<\/p>\n

Kage Korenek allowed one run on five hits with six strikeouts and four walks in 5.2 innings. Downing allowed two runs on three hits with one walk and no outs recorded. Skaggs allowed one hit and struck out one batter for his lone out recorded. Kord Korenek allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout and two walks in two innings.<\/p>\n

Mitchell, Quinn and DeBellas all had two hits for Calallen (37-2).<\/p>\n

Carroll allowed three runs on three hits with 12 strikeouts and two walks in six innings.
