American Songwriter<\/a>\u00a0calling it the best performance of the night. \u201cThat was news to me,\u201d the Alabama native admitted. \u201cWhat an awesome thing to hear.\u00a0There’s\u00a0so many great performers and great songs at that award show, and I just think\u00a0it’s\u00a0so cool that a song\u00a0that’s\u00a0been around for that long could still have life.\u201d Green released the track earlier this year as the third single from his album,\u00a0Don\u2019t\u00a0Mind If I Do.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\nHe added, \u201cIt’s\u00a0one of those songs that really kind of snuck up on me and really grew on me. And\u00a0probably the\u00a0biggest transition from when I wrote a song to what it became in the studio. You\u00a0know,\u00a0that intro lick was such a… Like, you know it as soon as it comes on. And this was so great about having\u00a0new music\u00a0out. When\u00a0you’re\u00a0playing on the road and on tours, you get to see what songs fans really love, and that was one of them that just kind of hung around. So excited that I got to perform it and excited that it’s, you know, become a big old hit for me.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Smith asked the Marshals actor if \u201cThink\u00a0As\u00a0You Drunk\u201d is ushering in a new era for him and how he\u00a0came up with\u00a0the Toby Keith nod at the end. \u201cWell, I’ve always been a huge Toby Keith fan, and even more so when I found out that he wrote so many songs by himself,\u201d Green said. \u201cYou know,\u00a0that’s\u00a0such a cool thing.\u00a0And as a songwriter, that\u00a0meant so much to me. And, you know,\u00a0I’ve\u00a0tried to follow his footsteps in a lot of ways in my career. I know he played a lot of shows overseas for the troops, and\u00a0we’ve\u00a0scheduled some of those to try to\u00a0go and do\u00a0the same thing.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
He added, \u201cAnd when I wrote this song, I remember when we got done, I said, \u2018Man, that sounds like something Toby Keith would have wrote.\u2019 It was cool to be able to throw a little nod towards him at the end, and it certainly fit the song, and\u00a0it’s\u00a0just such a fun song, and\u00a0I’m\u00a0glad I can finally talk about it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
