One day after their co-tenants, the NBA\u2019s Dallas Mavericks, announced a likely move out of downtown Dallas, the NHL\u2019s Stars appear to be following suit.<\/p>\n
On Tuesday, the \u200bStars announced that they have inked a letter of \u200cintent to move and build a $1 billion arena in Plano, Texas, at a location 18 miles north of downtown.<\/p>\n
The proposed site is at The Shops of Willow Bend, which, similar to the Mavericks\u2019 potential new home 10 \u200cmiles \u200bnorth of downtown (current Valley View Mall site \u2060in North Dallas), is \u2060slated to be a mixed-use development with an arena and entertainment district in the planning stages.<\/p>\n
Both franchises currently compete at the American Airlines Arena in downtown Dallas and their leases \u200bexpire after the 2030-31 season. Whereas the Mavericks were deciding between a move to the current City Hall location and \u2060the suburbs, the Stars were said \u2060to be considering staying put and signing a new \u200blease.<\/p>\n
In a statement, the Stars said that the LOI which was \u200bsubmitted to the city of Plano is non-binding and \u200cit will be taken up by the Plano City Council next Monday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis project would present a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our franchise,\u201d team owner Tom Gaglardi said in a statement. \u201cWe eagerly await the \u2060vote by the Plano City Council and look forward to continuing the conversation to be part of the redevelopment at The Shops at \u2060Willow Bend.\u201d<\/p>\n
If both \u200cmoves come to fruition, the WNBA\u2019s Dallas Wings \u2014 \u2060who are building an $81 million, 70,000-square-foot practice facility \u200bin \u200cthe West Oak Cliff area of Dallas and \u200bplan to \u2060play in 2027 at the current home of the Stars and Mavericks \u2014 would be the only Dallas franchise located within the city limits. The NFL\u2019s Dallas Cowboys and MLB\u2019s Texas Rangers play in Arlington, Texas, while FC Dallas of the MLS competes in Frisco, \u200bTexas.<\/p>\n
