EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 Drivers in far West El Paso will see a new lane setup at the South Desert Boulevard and Vinton Road intersection as TxDOT works to ease congestion tied to the ongoing I-10 widening project.<\/p>\n

TxDOT said crews conducted an overnight closure last week on South Desert from Anthony to Vinton to complete work on a reconfiguration of the intersection. The area has seen increased traffic flow because entrance ramps to I-10 are closed while crews reconstruct the outside lanes and bridges.<\/p>\n

Before the change, the eastbound intersection included a U-turn lane, a designated left-turn lane, a left-turn-and-through combination lane, and a designated left-turn-only lane. Under the new configuration, drivers going through the intersection now have two lanes. The far-left lane remains a U-turn lane, followed by an optional left-or-straight lane, a designated through lane, and a designated right-turn-only lane.<\/p>\n

TxDOT said crews also adjusted signal timing to improve traffic flow through the area. The work is part of the I-10 widening project, which remains an active work zone. Crews are demolishing seven bridges and rebuilding them, along with the outside lanes of I-10 and exit and entrance ramps.<\/p>\n

TxDOT reminded drivers that eastbound exit and entrance ramps to I-10 are closed from Anthony to Los Mochis. Westbound, the new Vinton Exit 3 is open, and after that the entrance and exit ramps are closed through Anthony. The construction is expected to last through May 2027.<\/p>\n

TxDOT also used the update to remind drivers about the dangers of unsecured cargo ahead of National Secure Your Load Day, observed annually on June 6. The agency said unsecured loads can endanger drivers and pedestrians, noting that each year about 850 people are killed and almost 19,000 more are injured in crashes involving objects in the road.<\/p>\n

TxDOT offered several tips for securing cargo: tie it down with rope, netting or straps; tie large objects directly to a vehicle or trailer; consider covering the entire load with a sturdy tarp or netting; do not load excessive amounts of cargo in or on a vehicle or trailer; and double-check that the load is secure. TxDOT noted all 50 states have laws regarding unsecured loads and said cargo should be tied down to prevent anything from dropping, shifting, leaking or otherwise escaping a vehicle.<\/p>\n

In addition, TxDOT announced a free bike rodeo for families this Saturday in partnership with Justice of the Peace Lucilla Najera, the El Paso Police Department, the El Paso Capital Improvement Department and others. The event will include a bike safety skills course, helmet fitting, safety checks and an obstacle course for children, with an emphasis on safety gear, bike checks and rules of the road.<\/p>\n

The bike rodeo is scheduled for this Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Walmart at 8115 North Loop Drive. Kids of all ages are welcome and should bring their bike and helmet.<\/p>\n
