ZAGREB, 4 June 2026 \u2013 Heavy traffic was reported across Croatia on Thursday morning as the Corpus Christi public holiday prompted increased travel on major roads and at several border crossings.<\/p>\n

According to the Croatian Automobile Club (HAK), traffic was significantly heavier than usual from the early hours of the day, particularly on routes leading towards the coast.<\/p>\n

On the A1 motorway between Zagreb and Plo\u010de-Karamati\u0107i, traffic moved slowly with occasional stoppages between the Lu\u010dko toll plaza and the Karlovac interchange in the direction of the Adriatic coast.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, on the A2 Zagreb\u2013Macelj motorway, a queue of around one kilometre formed before the Trako\u0161\u0107an toll plaza in the direction of Zagreb, Dnevnik.hr<\/a> writes.<\/p>\n

HAK also warned drivers about the possibility of rockfalls on mountain roads and along parts of the Adriatic Highway (DC8).<\/p>\n

Additional disruption was caused by temporary traffic regulations on the A1 motorway.<\/p>\n

In Zagreb, further traffic disruption was expected after the complete closure of a section of Slavonska Avenue and the underpass beneath it from Thursday morning until Sunday evening. <\/p>\n

The closure was introduced to allow for the removal of the northern section of the Vjesnik skyscraper and to ensure public safety.<\/p>\n

At Croatia\u2019s border crossings, longer waiting times than usual were reported for freight vehicles entering the country due to the introduction of a new customs system.<\/p>\n

The increase in traffic coincided with one of Croatia\u2019s long-standing holiday traditions known as \u201cspajanje\u201d, where workers take one or two days of annual leave to create an extended break around public holidays. Many workers took the opportunity to take Friday off, giving them a 4-day weekend.<\/p>\n

June is particularly popular for such breaks, with Corpus Christi falling on a Thursday and Anti-Fascist Resistance Day later in the month offering another opportunity for extended time off.<\/p>\n

The combination of the public holiday, favourable weather and the start of the summer travel season contributed to the increased volume of traffic seen across the country on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n
