HOUSTON \u2013 Harris County Public Health, working with the Harris County Office of Emergency Management and the City of Houston, has launched a public-facing Ebola dashboard designed to keep residents updated as officials monitor for any confirmed cases in the region.<\/p>\n

The dashboard is intended to serve as a central source for current information and situational awareness \u2014 particularly as international travel increases and Houston prepares to host major events in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n

What the dashboard is \u2014 and what it isn\u2019t<\/p>\n

Officials have emphasized that the tool is about transparency and coordination, not an indication that Ebola is spreading locally.<\/p>\n

Recent briefings from Houston-area leaders have repeatedly stressed that the risk to the general public remains low, and that Ebola is not spread through casual contact.<\/p>\n

Why Houston-area leaders are talking about Ebola right now<\/p>\n

Local and federal public health systems have been paying close attention to Ebola due to an ongoing outbreak in parts of Central Africa.<\/p>\n

Local officials explained that George Bush Intercontinental Airport was selected as one of only three U.S. airports for enhanced screening of certain travelers arriving from countries impacted by the outbreak.<\/p>\n

Houston Health Department Director Dr. Theresa Tran told Houston City Council that the airport screening process involves CDC and Customs and Border Protection coordination, targeted health questions, and follow-up monitoring for up to 21 days \u2014 the outer limit of Ebola\u2019s incubation period.<\/p>\n

Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo has urged residents to stay informed but not alarmed.<\/p>\n

In a recent livestream update, Hidalgo said the focus right now is on public information and monitoring, noting that travelers may be screened and then tracked by local health departments during the 21-day monitoring window. She has also emphasized that Ebola is \u201cnowhere near as transmissible as COVID,\u201d because it spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids from someone who is sick.<\/p>\n

What to know about Ebola transmission<\/p>\n

Health experts say Ebola spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids (such as blood, vomit, or other fluids) of a person who is ill with Ebola, or through contaminated materials.<\/p>\n

Symptoms can include fever, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle pain and, in severe cases, internal or external bleeding.<\/p>\n

Officials have said that travelers flagged during screening can be referred for additional medical evaluation and, when needed, transported safely to hospitals equipped for infectious disease isolation.<\/p>\n

Local leaders have also indicated the region has designated facilities and protocols in place \u2014 shaped in part by lessons learned from the 2014 Ebola case in Dallas.<\/p>\n
