Lainey Wagner wrote \u201cHip Hip Hooray\u201d to explain hip dysplasia, a condition where the bones in the hip joint don\u2019t fit together properly. She was diagnosed in sixth grade.(KCBD Video)<\/p>\n
\u201cWe think I\u2019ve had it since I was born but we didn\u2019t catch it until I was in the sixth grade,\u201d Wagner said. \u201cMy hip was basically dislocated. And very painful.\u201d<\/p>\n
Understanding the condition<\/p>\n
The book explains how to prepare mentally for surgery and what happens on the day of the procedure. Wagner describes the surgical process in detail.<\/p>\n
\u201cBasically they broke my femur and my pelvis, rotated them and then put screw and pins and plates and all the things in there to keep it back in place to where it\u2019s supposed to be,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
The book includes pictures and emojis to help readers understand the level of pain patients experience after surgery.<\/p>\n
Lainey\u2019s mother, Emily Wagner, said learning about the diagnosis was difficult.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was heartbreaking to see…when we found out she had hip dysplasia and was going to have to have these surgeries,\u201d Emily Wagner said.<\/p>\n
Teacher connection<\/p>\n
Two teachers at Liberty High School inspired Wagner to write the book: Kathy Eubanks, who teaches anatomy and physiology, and Bobbe Kite, who teaches health sciences.<\/p>\n
Kite has a personal connection to the condition.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy first daughter was born with congenital hip dysplasia as well,\u201d Kite said. \u201cSo that just made me want to buy the book and keep the book and support Lainey anyway I can.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Michael Diab, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, performed Wagner\u2019s surgeries. His picture appears in the book, and he said the information could help other young patients.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s always very helpful for other patients to get an idea about the surgery and what to expect,\u201d Diab said.<\/p>\n
Wagner said the experience shaped her career plans.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow I\u2019m in such a great place in my life and I know what I want to do for my future,\u201d she said. \u201cPhysical therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n
Eubanks said Wagner\u2019s journey motivated her future goals.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was a hard road for her but it\u2019s motivated her to continue on to physical therapy and help others,\u201d Eubanks said.<\/p>\n
