The San Antonio Spurs<\/a> are not just down in the NBA Finals anymore, they are now standing in a historical hole that has never produced a champion.<\/p>\n

Game 2 turned a difficult start into something much heavier. The New York Knicks<\/a> escaped San Antonio<\/a> with another win, and the Spurs now have to carry a deficit that brings some ugly company with it.<\/p>\n

The names attached to this pattern are not encouraging. Both teams that walked this road before ended their Finals with disappointment.<\/p>\n

Underdog NBA<\/a> noted that the San Antonio Spurs became only the third team in NBA history to lose Games 1 and 2 at home in the Finals.<\/p>\n

The previous two were the 1993 Phoenix Suns and the 1995 Orlando Magic. That is the part that makes the Spurs\u2019 situation feel so alarming, because neither team recovered enough to win the championship.<\/p>\n

The Knicks took Game 1 by a 105-95 score, then survived Game 2 105-104 to leave San Antonio with a 2-0 series lead. For the Spurs, losing both home games means they now need to flip the series in Madison Square Garden.<\/p>\n

That is a brutal ask. The Knicks have already shown they can win late, win ugly, and win on the road, which leaves San Antonio with almost no margin for another mistake.<\/p>\n

San Antonio Spurs face Phoenix Suns and Orlando Magic warning after Game 2<\/p>\n

The 1993 Suns at least fought back after dropping Games 1 and 2 at home against Michael Jordan\u2019s Chicago Bulls<\/a>. Phoenix pushed the series to six games, but Chicago still closed it out with John Paxson\u2019s famous Game 6 jumper.<\/p>\n

The 1995 Magic had it even worse. Orlando lost the first two games at home to the Houston Rockets<\/a>, never recovered from the Game 1 collapse, and was swept in four games by Hakeem Olajuwon\u2019s defending champions.<\/p>\n

That history is what makes this Spurs deficit feel so dangerous. No team that has lost the first two Finals games at home has gone on to lift the trophy.<\/p>\n

San Antonio still has Victor Wembanyama<\/a>, but history is now working against him. If the past is any guide, the Spurs\u2019 Game 2 loss may have already pointed this series toward a Knicks championship.<\/p>\n
