LONDON (AP) \u2014 A Russian drone strike killed three people waiting at a bus stop in southeastern Ukraine on Sunday, an official said, as British Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosts the leaders of Ukraine, France and Germany for talks on ongoing support for Kyiv.<\/p>\n
Another person was wounded in the drone attack in Balabyne in Ukraine\u2019s southern Zaporizhzhia region, the head of the regional military administration, Ivan Fedorov, wrote on his Telegram channel.<\/p>\n
A separate drone strike damaged a storage center for spent nuclear fuel in the Kyiv region, just 15 kilometers (9 miles) from the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, Ukraine\u2019s General Staff said. The attack sparked a fire that was extinguished within an hour. Radiation remains within safe levels, officials said.<\/p>\n
The International Atomic Energy Agency chief Rafael Grossi said the incident was \u201cdeeply concerning\u201d due to the large amounts of nuclear material held at the facility. He said in a statement that the agency would visit the site of the attack soon.<\/p>\n
Elsewhere, a Ukrainian attack killed one man and injured a woman in Russia\u2019s Kursk region, local Gov. Alexander Khinshtein said.<\/p>\n
The meeting on Sunday evening of Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz comes in the wake of a large-scale Ukrainian drone attack that targeted Saint Petersburg, Russia\u2019s second-largest city, underscoring Kyiv\u2019s growing ability to hit deep inside Russia. Gov. Alexander Beglov said three people sustained minor injuries in Saturday\u2019s attack, during which residents were advised to stay indoors.<\/p>\n
The U.K., France and Germany, the so-called E3 group of European nations, have been prominent backers of Ukraine following Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The U.K. and France lead the \u201ccoalition of the willing\u201d initiative to provide security guarantees for Ukraine as part of a peace process.<\/p>\n
With the front line barely moving as swarms of drones hinder advances, both sides have sought an edge by launching long-range strikes. The war that followed Russia\u2019s invasion of its neighbor is more than four years old, with no end in sight.<\/p>\n
The St. Petersburg attack, which came less than 24 hours after the end of the city’s flagship economic forum, was an embarrassing blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s efforts to cast the conflict as a distant event that doesn\u2019t affect Russian daily life.<\/p>\n
Putin on Friday rejected Zelenskyy’s offer for a meeting, saying he sees \u201cno point\u201d in it.<\/p>\n
