LUBBOCK, Texas \u2013 Texas Tech football will get its quarterback on the field after all.<\/p>\n
On Monday morning, Red Raiders quarterback Brendan Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction in his battle with the NCAA.<\/p>\n
The decision came from a Lubbock County court and was issued by visiting Judge Ken Curry.<\/p>\n
Sorsby, who had been ruled ineligible because of gambling violations, can now play during the 2026 season for Texas Tech. He was one of the top-rated quarterbacks in the transfer portal before joining the Red Raiders after starring for the Cincinnati Bearcats.<\/p>\n
After starting 24 games and recording more than 5,600 passing yards and 45 touchdown passes in two seasons at Cincinnati, Sorsby reportedly received an NIL package worth more than $5 million after transferring to Texas Tech.<\/p>\n
According to previous court documents, Sorsby placed bets involving the Indiana Hoosiers while he was a member of the program in 2022. Over a four-year period, he reportedly wagered nearly $100,000.<\/p>\n
After arriving in Lubbock, his gambling issues continued, leading Sorsby to seek treatment at a gambling rehabilitation center in April. The Red Raiders quarterback also spent more than a month at a treatment facility in Arizona.<\/p>\n
According to Judge Curry\u2019s ruling and court documents, Sorsby will be allowed to return but must sit out the first two weeks of the season, causing him to miss games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State.<\/p>\n
Sorsby would be eligible to return to the field and make his Texas Tech debut in the Red Raiders\u2019 Big 12 opener against the Houston Cougars on Sept. 18 in a nationally televised Friday night game in Lubbock.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis court finds that applicant [Sorsby] has demonstrated that he will suffer a probable, imminent, and irreparable injury if this court does not issue this temporary injunction because he will be unable to participate as a member of Texas Tech University\u2019s 2026 football team,\u201d Judge Curry wrote in the injunction order.<\/p>\n
The NCAA is unhappy with Monday\u2019s ruling and plans to appeal. However, that process could take months \u2014 and potentially close to a year \u2014 to resolve.<\/p>\n
By that point, Sorsby\u2019s 2026 season, and potentially his collegiate career, would be over as he prepares to take the next step toward the NFL in 2027.<\/p>\n
