SUNLAND PARK, N.M. (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 City officials of Sunland Park, New Mexico, are continuing to monitor and respond to a wastewater spill originating from neighboring Anapra, Chihuahua, while working to keep residents informed about public health and environmental impacts.<\/p>\n

According to the City of Sunland Park, reports of a sewer-like odor near the Carlos Aguirre area led city staff to investigate the situation. <\/p>\n

Officials confirmed that the odor was linked to a combined sewer overflow originating from Anapra and that response protocols were immediately activated.<\/p>\n

City leaders said they have been coordinating closely with the Camino Real Regional Utility Authority (CRRUA) and other partner agencies to assess conditions and implement mitigation measures. CRRUA crews began disinfection efforts, including the application of soda ash, and officials indicated that additional treatment measures would be deployed if necessary.<\/p>\n

During recent community outreach efforts, residents voiced concerns about water quality, infrastructure reliability, and ongoing utility challenges in the region. Local officials emphasized that while the spill is being monitored, no additional impacts to Sunland Park’s infrastructure have been confirmed at this time.<\/p>\n

The incident comes as Sunland Park continues broader efforts to improve water and wastewater infrastructure. Earlier this year, the City Council approved $1.2 million for rehabilitation projects involving water tanks in Anapra, Meadow Vista, and Tierra Madre, while also authorizing the creation of a new city utility department aimed at improving local oversight and service delivery.<\/p>\n

Mayor Javier Perea has previously stated that city officials are working to ensure uninterrupted utility services while addressing long-standing infrastructure needs. The city has also committed to increasing communication with residents through community meetings and expanded outreach efforts.<\/p>\n

Residents living near the affected area may continue to notice temporary odors as response efforts continue. <\/p>\n

The City will host a Town Hall meeting on June 11 from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. at City Council Chambers (1000 McNutt Rd, Sunland Park, NM, 88063) to provide updates and answer questions.<\/p>\n
