BRAZORIA COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) — The Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office says that the deputy involved in the fatal shooting of a Texas State University student has been fired.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday afternoon, Brazoria County Sheriff Bo Stallman announced on social media that Kevin Tippett, the deputy who shot and killed 18-year-old John Mendoza Jr., was terminated from his employment.<\/p>\n

Authorities say that Mendoza Jr. was shot and killed in the garage of his Lake Jackson home on June 1.<\/p>\n

The sheriff says the termination is independent of the Texas Rangers’ investigation, and the case will go to a grand jury to decide if there will be any charges, which the district attorney’s office announced last week.<\/p>\n
