SAN ELIZARIO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 Autopsy results show that a 46-year-old man who died in Sheriff’s custody back in March died of a drug overdose. <\/p>\n
According to the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office, the office of the Medical Examiner ruled the death of 46-year-old Roel Contreras accidental, determining that he died from acute methamphetamine toxicity, adding that atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (a buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances in and on the artery walls) was a factor.<\/p>\n
RELATED: El Paso County deputies probe death of man in custody after San Elizario welfare check<\/a><\/p>\n As was reported earlier in the year, Contreras died March 20 after deputies detained him at the 12000 block of Campo Bello in San Elizario following 911 calls from nearby residents saying that a man was running and screaming through the neighborhood.<\/p>\n The Sheriff’s Office described finding Contreras in an open field, half-naked, acting erratically and being combative against deputies.<\/p>\n After Contreras was handcuffed, he lost consciousness and was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.<\/p>\n On Wednesday, almost three months after the incident, the Sheriff’s Office released bodycam footage showing deputies detaining Contreras before he appears to lose consciousness and deputies try life-saving measures.<\/p>\n Deputies handcuff Contreras and ask him to relax as his breathing is erratic.<\/p>\n You can hear Contreras tell Deputies, “My heart, bro,” as he continues breathing anxiously.<\/p>\n Deputies turn him on his stomach to cuff his feet to keep him from kicking and, at this point, it appears Contreras blacks out.<\/p>\n WATCH:<\/p>\n (The video was edited for language and content)<\/p>\n Bodycam footage showing the detention of Roel Contreras before his death.
