SAN ANTONIO — There’s a new exhibition on display now through January in San Antonio featuring Texas music legend Selena Quintanilla-Pérez.

Over 30 years after her untimely death, the Tejano superstar is still making a name for herself. Now you can see never-before-seen photos on display at the Briscoe Western Art Museum in downtown San Antonio.

The classic songs of Selena echo through the room that was transformed into a time capsule.

“We’re really excited to be debuting the ‘Selena Forever: Siempre Selena’ exhibition here at the Briscoe Western Art Museum,” said Valerie Burciaga, with the museum.

The exhibit is made up of iconic photos of the superstar.

“Between 1992 and 1994, capturing her rise to stardom during a pivotal time of Tejano music culture,” said Burciaga.

Burciaga said it even includes some photos taken right here in the Alamo City.

“This one was taken six months before her death, so she was 23,” said Burciaga.

At 23 years old, Selena was shot to death in her hometown of Corpus Christi, but her star continued to rise.

“Selena is a pivotal icon even today, so many years after her death, in Tejano culture, in music culture,” said Burciaga.

A part of the display at the museum is the superstar on multiple magazine covers.

“These are some of the images that have never been shown together within this collection of the Selena Forever, as well as magazine covers that were captured by the same photographer, John Dyer,” said Burciaga.

Her unique style, especially back then, still turns heads today — now inspiring a new generation.

“Her iconic red lipstick and the hoop earrings were a classic for every Mexican-American girl in the 90s,” said Burciaga.

The exhibition is a precursor to a Tejano legacy exhibition that will open later this summer.

“We’re just so excited to have the same families that grew up listening to her music passing those traditions on to their young daughters and inspiring new generations of fans of Selena,” said Burciaga.
