EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 An El Paso man has been charged with murder after a victim who allegedly suffered severe head injuries during an assault in May died weeks later, according to court documents. <\/p>\n

Stefon Anthony Bonito, 25, was arrested and charged with murder in connection with the death of 47-year-old Alberto Bustamante, according to a complaint affidavit. <\/p>\n

Investigators allege that on May 15, Bonito assaulted Bustamante, causing multiple skull fractures and other serious injuries. Court records state that Bustamante was hospitalized following the incident and later died from those injuries on June 6.<\/p>\n

According to the affidavit, Bustamante’s sister, Beatriz Bustamante, discovered her brother injured inside his apartment on May 18 after being unable to contact him. <\/p>\n

She told investigators that as she approached the apartment, Bonito allegedly told her, “I hit your brother.”<\/p>\n

The affidavit states that she found blood on a mattress and pillow and observed a dent on her brother’s head. <\/p>\n

Due to his injuries, Bustamante was reportedly unable to speak and could only make grunting sounds. <\/p>\n

He was initially taken to Sierra Medical Center before being transferred to University Medical Center and later to a hospice facility, where he died.<\/p>\n

Police also interviewed an employee of a nearby auto sales business who reported seeing Bustamante sitting on the ground outside the apartment complex on May 15 with blood on the right side of his face. <\/p>\n

The witness told investigators he saw Bonito standing nearby and allegedly heard him make insulting remarks toward the victim. The witness later identified Bonito in a photo lineup, according to court records.<\/p>\n

Investigators said the witness also reported that Bonito approached him the following day and asked whether surveillance cameras had captured footage of his residence.<\/p>\n

An autopsy determined that Bustamante suffered multiple skull fractures and blunt head trauma. The medical examiner ruled the cause of death as blunt force head trauma and classified the manner of death as homicide, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n

Bonito was formally charged with murder. <\/p>\n
