EL PASO, Texas (KFOX 14, CBS 4) \u2014 Watch parties across El Paso were thrilled to see Mexico defeat South Africa 2-0 in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup in Mexico City. <\/p>\n
In the ninth minute Mexico dispossessed South Africa deep in their own half. The ball came to the feet of Julian Quinones, who took a touch inside and fired the ball between the legs of the goalkeeper to put Mexico on top 1-0. In the 48th minute, Mexico midfielder Brian Gutierrez was running free on goal, but then Sphephelo Sithole took him down just outside the penalty box. The referee, Wilton Sampaio, showed Sithole a red card, bringing the visitors down to 10 men. Shortly after, Roberto Alvarado sent a cross to the back post and Raul Jimenez headed it into the net to double the Mexican lead. South African substitute Themba Zwane was shown a red card, after VAR found that he struck Alvardo in the face. Then in stoppage time, Mexico’s Cesar Montes was sent off for chopping down Khuliso Mudau. This brought the total to three red cards. Mexico held on in the final few minutes to close out the 2-0 victory. <\/p>\n
The District Pub held a watch party for the match and it was packed with fans in Mexico kits. When Mexico scored the entire bar erupted in cheers. Throughout the match, fans were chanting and there was even a mariachi band playing. The District will host a watch party for the United States match on Friday and for both teams matches throughout the tournament. <\/p>\n
After matchday one, Mexico leads Group A with three points. South Korea defeated Czechia 2-1. So the Koreans sit in second also on three points, but behind on goal difference. <\/p>\n
