That\u2019s the one thing that can hollow out a sport from the inside \u2014 and the Brendan Sorsby case is sitting right at that line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">Sorsby is currently eligible to play for Texas Tech. The courts have spoken, at least for now. The Big 12 could still move, and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has already threatened legal action if they do. Sorsby\u2019s lawyer has put the conference on notice. And somewhere underneath all of it, a $5-6 million NIL deal is waiting to see which way this falls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">But this video isn\u2019t just about Sorsby.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">It\u2019s about why gambling has always been the uncrossable line in sports \u2014 from the 1919 Black Sox, to Pete Rose, to a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1951_college_basketball_point-shaving_scandal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">1951 college basketball point-shaving scandal<\/a> that almost nobody talks about anymore. Thirty-five players. Seven schools. CCNY, the winner of the 1950 NCAA tournament. Kentucky, the winner of the 1951 NCAA tournament. Bradley. Bribes taken from 1947 to 1950. It killed major college basketball in New York City for a generation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1upudxki _174s0un1 _174s0un0 _1mt21p01\">The reason gambling is different from every other controversy in college sports right now is simple: sports is the only content we consume where the outcome isn\u2019t controlled. Sometimes the rulebook doesn\u2019t need a lawsuit.
