EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 A disabled El Paso resident who relies entirely on a wheelchair is regaining independence after a major accessibility makeover to his home was made possible by a grant from Stewart Title.<\/p>\n
The home of Jorge Rodriguez had never been built to accommodate his mobility needs. The narrow doorways restricted movement, electrical switches were out of reach and a traditional bathtub created daily safety risks. Even getting in and out of the home required assistance. Living in a home that didn’t allow Rodriguez to live comfortably increased feelings of isolation and added both physical and emotional strain.<\/p>\n
Rebuilding Together El Paso, partnering with Stewart Title, developed an accessibility plan that included widening doorways and converting them into pocket doors for wheelchair access, relocating electrical switches to appropriate heights and distances, installing an accessible vanity designed to reduce reaching distance, converting the bathtub into a walk-in shower to reduce fall risks, and building three exterior ramps to allow safer entry and exit.<\/p>\n
With the improvements complete, Rodriguez can now move more freely and safely throughout the home, with a reduced risk of injury and added peace of mind for him and his family.<\/p>\n
