{"id":33654,"date":"2025-11-03T21:34:06","date_gmt":"2025-11-03T21:34:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/33654\/"},"modified":"2025-11-03T21:34:06","modified_gmt":"2025-11-03T21:34:06","slug":"corpus-christi-leaders-bring-evangeline-to-san-patricio-county-commissioners","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/33654\/","title":{"rendered":"Corpus Christi leaders bring Evangeline to San Patricio County Commissioners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SINTON, Texas \u2014 Corpus Christi City Manager Peter Zanoni and Corpus Christi Water representatives presented details of the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/corpus-christi\/corpus-christis-evangeline-water-deal-could-cost-840-million-require-treatment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Evangeline Groundwater Project <\/a>during Monday\u2019s <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/news\/local-news\/in-your-neighborhood\/san-patricio-county\/san-patricio-county-commissioners-sign-resolution-opposing-evangeline-groundwater-project\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Patricio County Commissioners Court meeting.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The plan would draw water from the <a class=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kristv.com\/running-dry\/corpus-christi-approves-169-million-groundwater-deal-as-water-crisis-looms\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Evangeline Aquifer in San Patricio County.<\/a> Officials said the project would initially deliver up to 12 million gallons per day, with capacity to expand to 24 million gallons in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Corpus Christi leaders bring Evangeline project to San Patricio County Commissioners<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis gives us the ability to alternate between groundwater and surface water depending on the conditions,\u201d Zanoni told commissioners, adding that groundwater could be used predominantly during drought periods \u201cuntil the reservoir levels recover.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He said the city would adjust operations based on data \u201cso we avoid any negative impacts on local wells.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nick Winkelmann, interim chief operating officer for Corpus Christi Water, said new wells tapping the aquifer would reach depths of about 800 feet, much deeper than most residential or livestock wells, and be separated by natural clay layers to prevent interaction between water sources. <\/p>\n<p>WATCH OUR PREVIOUS REPORTING ON EVANGELINE:<br \/>__________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>Corpus Christi\u2019s Evangeline water deal could cost $840 million, require treatment<\/p>\n<p>__________________________________________________<\/p>\n<p>The project site is near the Mary Rhodes Pipeline, which would carry treated water to the Owen Stevens Water Treatment Plant serving Corpus Christi and surrounding communities.<\/p>\n<p>Zanoni also told commissioners a fund to help residents whose wells could be affected was not yet in the city\u2019s budget but was being developed.<\/p>\n<p>Sinton Mayor Mary Speidel said she appreciated the city\u2019s progress and improved communication surrounding Evangeline. \u201cWe are happy with their effort to outreach to the community, make an effort to explain what\u2019s going on, to answer our questions,\u201d Speidel said. \u201cThey\u2019ve made an effort to have community meetings and town hall meetings, and we appreciate that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speidel continued, \u201cOur primary goal is to protect the city of Sinton\u2019s water source. We do, however, want to be a good neighbor with Corpus, and we want to do whatever we can to make this work for everyone.
