LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Ivan Ortiz usually spends his days cutting hair at his barbershop and working with the Texas Tech football team. But since October 16, he\u2019s been at UMC hospital with his wife, Maddie.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s when he got a call at 2:45 a.m. telling him Maddie had been hit by a drunk driver.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m kind of numb to the pain right now. I\u2019ve cried every day and it\u2019s hard,\u201d Ivan said.<\/p>\n
Maddie has been in the ICU since the crash and has had multiple surgeries. Ivan stays by her side every day. The couple got married in February after being together for seven years.<\/p>\n
Maddie was a stay-at-home mom to their 3-year-old son. Ivan was the family\u2019s provider, but he hasn\u2019t been able to work since the crash.<\/p>\n
\u201cI hardly sleep, I probably sleep like two-three hours a day,\u201d Ivan said. \u201cI\u2019ve shared the bed with Maddie for like seven years. Then I go home to nothing, just me and my son. It\u2019s a different feeling especially with someone you share the bed with.\u201d<\/p>\n
Their young son doesn\u2019t fully understand why his mother isn\u2019t home, but Ivan can see the impact on him.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s like a puzzle piece, you know we just built a puzzle. Now there\u2019s a couple pieces missing,\u201d he said. \u201cIt don\u2019t feel the same, it don\u2019t look the same. I don\u2019t feel complete anymore. I lost something and I\u2019m trying to get it back.\u201d<\/p>\n
Ivan has set up a GoFundMe to help with expenses while he focuses on his family instead of work. But he says what they need most is prayers.<\/p>\n
\u201cI need all the prayer warriors I can get right now for Maddie,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt this time in my life right now while going through this difficult situation it\u2019s a time in need,\u201d Ivan said. \u201cI do need help. I am asking if anybody can help. I don\u2019t want to leave Maddie\u2019s side.\u201d<\/p>\n
