LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – With temperatures expected to reach triple digits, the Lubbock Police Department is reminding residents that leaving a child or animal in a car is dangerous.<\/p>\n
Kasie Davis with the Lubbock Police Department said the law applies to children 7 years old and under who are left alone in a vehicle for more than five minutes.<\/p>\n
There is an exception if there is an individual who is 14 years or older in the car with that child. Davis said that may protect someone from committing a crime, but that does not make it much safer.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think y\u2019all are forecasting 105 degrees tomorrow, that\u2019s a very, very hot day. As the viewers at home who are watching this story know, it doesn\u2019t have to be 105 for a vehicle to be hot inside. We\u2019re talking 70\u2019s and 80\u2019s and it can already become stifling in a vehicle,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n
LPD reports there were half a dozen hot car cases reported in Lubbock that fit this criteria in 2023. Lubbock has only seen two cases since then.<\/p>\n
\u201cChildren do not regulate their body temperature the same way that adults do, and so they\u2019re going to get a lot hotter a lot sooner, and quite frankly, become much more in danger a lot sooner than an adult would,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n
When it comes to pets in cars, Davis said there is a city ordinance in place where a Lubbock Animal Services or LPD officer can remove them from the vehicle for their safety.<\/p>\n
If someone sees a child or pet in this situation, Davis said it is best to call 911.<\/p>\n
\u201cGet on the line with dispatchers. They can immediately dispatch EMS, they can immediately dispatch our officers and if based off of the circumstances things escalate, than that dispatcher will instruct that individual what are the best steps to take next,\u201d Davis said.<\/p>\n
