The\u00a0backstory of the property<\/p>\n
JCPenney relocated from New York to the Plano campus in 1992. After nearly 30 years, the company vacated its headquarters in 2020 after filing for bankruptcy, according to WFAA.<\/a> <\/p>\n However, JCPenney announced a move back to part of the campus<\/a> along Legacy Drive in 2023, leasing 320,000 square-feet of office space for roughly 2,000 employees. The move followed a $10 million renovation at the property, adding two pickleball courts, an arcade, several cafes and dining areas, a golf simulator and an employee gym to the site, according to D Magazine.\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n As of 2026,\u00a0JCPenney remains headquartered at the campus, though it no longer occupies the entire property.<\/p>\n A site map of the former JCPenney campus in Plano, Texas. (City of Plano)<\/p>\n Part of a larger mixed-use revitalization<\/p>\n StreetLights Residential’s plans are part of a broader billion-dollar redevelopment planned for the expansive Plano site, now called The Park at Legacy.<\/p>\n The Plano City Council approved a rezoning of the 107-acre property with a 5-23 vote in 2024 to make way for a mixed-use development proposed by Capital Commercial Investments, according to Community Impact<\/a>. The proposed redevelopment detailed four new office towers, four restaurants, a hotel, a mixed-use building, 750 mid-rise residential units, renovations of existing office and garage buildings, and 21 acres of open space.<\/p>\n At the time, Executive Vice President of Development for Andrew Lodeesen told Community Impact that the luxury residential portion of the revitalization was the “last remaining amenity for the activation of the site.”<\/p>\n Five acres of the property will also become the future Mendomi Park, thanks to a $15 million donation from Toyota Motor North America, according to the City of Plano<\/a>.
