SAN ANTONIO \u2014 San Antonio Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones says it\u2019s \u201conly fair\u201d that the billionaire head of Dell Technologies, Michael Dell, helps foot the bill for the city\u2019s $1.3 billion arena<\/a> that will be home to the Spurs.<\/p>\n

\u201cNormal folks in the community have routinely asked, be it at public comment or at other forums, \u2018Why can\u2019t we ask them (billionaires) to pay more.\u2019 So, I in fact did that,\u201d Jones told the San Antonio Express-News<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Dell is an investor in the Spurs franchise and recently became part-owner of the Las Vegas Raiders<\/a>. Dell stands at No. 6 on Forbes\u2019 list<\/a> of the top billionaires in the world as of June 17, 2026, and he has a net worth of $236.3 billion.<\/p>\n

The arena \u2014 part of the larger Project Marvel, which includes an entertainment district in downtown San Antonio \u2014 has been a controversial subject since it was announced. Some welcome the endeavor, citing an economic boost to the city, while others are critical of the cost.<\/p>\n

Jones pushed for an independent economic study to be done on the project by an entity with no ties to the Spurs. This was before City Council ultimately voted 7-4 to move forward with the project.
