SOCORRO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 Socorro Independent School District leaders delivered a State of the District address ahead of the district\u2019s board meeting Wednesday night, with Superintendent James Vasquez, where he highlighted student achievements, recognized staff, and outlined what\u2019s next for the district.<\/p>\n
The district has been under a conservatorship by the Texas Education Agency since 2024. <\/p>\n
In April, TEA conservators announced they plan to step away from Socorro ISD in about two months.<\/p>\n
Conservators Michael Hinojosa and Andrew Kim also provided an update on the status of the conservatorship.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s been quite a journey over the last two years. When I got here, it was a hot mess,” said Hinojosa. <\/p>\n
Hinojosa also spoke about cutting school programs.<\/p>\n
\u201cI love programs. I love mariachi, I love everything. But if you can\u2019t afford it, you can\u2019t have it,\u201d Hinojosa said. <\/p>\n
Hinojosa said the conservators won\u2019t leave just quite yet. They still have to deal with some issues.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s one issue left with special ed, a former person didn\u2019t fulfill their responsibilities, and the TEA is tough,” he said. <\/p>\n
Budget issues are also on the agenda for the board meeting. <\/p>\n
The district is expected to adopt a balanced budget.<\/p>\n
