{"id":343521,"date":"2026-06-20T00:09:18","date_gmt":"2026-06-20T00:09:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/343521\/"},"modified":"2026-06-20T00:09:18","modified_gmt":"2026-06-20T00:09:18","slug":"texas-historical-marker-unveiled-at-texas-tech-human-sciences-cottage-june-2026-texas-tech-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/343521\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas Historical Marker Unveiled at Texas Tech Human Sciences Cottage | June 2026 | Texas Tech Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                     The College of Health &amp; Human Sciences and the Lubbock County Historical Commission<br \/>\n                        celebrated the building\u2019s recognition after nearly 100 years on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\t\tCREATORS<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/ashlyn-grotegut.jpg\" alt=\"Portrait of Ashlyn Grotegut\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The fourth building on <a href=\"http:\/\/ttu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Texas Tech University<\/a>\u2019s campus now has signage that honors its legacy over nearly a century.<\/p>\n<p>A Texas Historical Marker was unveiled at the Human Sciences Cottage during a dedication<br \/>\n                           ceremony that began at 5 p.m. Thursday (June 18). The event celebrated a successful<br \/>\n                           application process that was a joint effort of faculty and staff from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/hs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">College of Health &amp; Human Sciences<\/a> and the Lubbock County Historical Commission.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The placement of the historical marker includes the Cottage in one of the most visible<br \/>\n                           programs of the Texas Historical Commission that commemorates topics in Texas history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHistoric spaces like the Human Sciences Cottage connect us to the generations of<br \/>\n                           students and faculty whose work helped shape the future of families and communities<br \/>\n                           across Texas and beyond,\u201d said Texas Tech President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ttu.edu\/president\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Lawrence Schovanec<\/a>. \u201cWe are proud to see this important chapter in the history of Texas Tech University<br \/>\n                           and the College of Health &amp; Human Sciences recognized with a Texas Historical Marker,<br \/>\n                           and we are grateful to all those who have preserved its legacy for future generations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>College of Health &amp; Human Sciences Dean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/hs\/about\/dean.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Tim Dodd<\/a> explains that the Cottage was practice-oriented after it was constructed in 1928<br \/>\n                           and called the Home Management House. Students within the College of Home Economics<br \/>\n                           used the house to gain the skills they would need to run their own household one day,<br \/>\n                           such as cooking, cleaning, gardening and even childcare through around-the-clock parenting<br \/>\n                           they provided through \u201cpractice babies.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Conference-Kitchen-2.jpg\" alt=\"Human Sciences Cottage's kitchen\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a place where it was about people and how households ran,\u201d he said. \u201cI think<br \/>\n                           to the history of Texas Tech, it really fits with that idea of people doing very practical<br \/>\n                           things that made a difference in people\u2019s lives and in the community, as well as for<br \/>\n                           students who came in to learn and really gained hands-on experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After four decades, the Cottage was no longer used for home management practice. It<br \/>\n                           was renovated and renamed in 2014 and is now home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.depts.ttu.edu\/hs\/car\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Center for Adolescent Resiliency<\/a> and also used as a venue for alumni gatherings, advisory board meetings, speakers<br \/>\n                           and more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>                        <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Conference-Center-1.jpg\" alt=\"The cottage's conference center. \"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever we have people from outside the community come in, we always host them there,\u201d<br \/>\n                           Dodd said. \u201cIt\u2019s just like a household should be: a welcoming place to bring people<br \/>\n                           in that matches that feeling of a home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dodd is thankful for support the Cottage has received as it became the fourth Texas<br \/>\n                           Historical Marker on the Texas Tech campus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEveryone really bought into this because it\u2019s a very worthy building that deserves<br \/>\n                           this recognition,\u201d he said. \u201cThere are some wonderful stories about all the education<br \/>\n                           and learning that went on in the Cottage.
