HUMBLE, Texas \u2013 The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable\u2019s Office responded shortly after 10 p.m. Friday to multiple calls reporting gunfire at an apartment complex in Humble.<\/p>\n
Callers reported a man walking through\u00a0Pavilion at the Groves\u00a0at\u00a015951 Woodland Hills\u00a0with a shotgun and firing it, Precinct 4 said. Deputies located the man and were\u00a0ambushed\u00a0when he opened fire, striking two deputies, according to an update from the agency. Deputies returned fire and the suspect retreated into an apartment.<\/p>\n
Precinct 4 identified the injured deputy as\u00a0Deputy Dante Zepeda, a patrol deputy assigned to the\u00a0Atascocita area\u00a0who has been employed since\u00a0July 21, 2025. Officials said it was later determined\u00a0Zepeda and a second deputy were struck\u00a0by shotgun pellets\/projectiles. <\/p>\n
Precinct 4 said Zepeda was hit in the\u00a0hip and upper arm\u00a0and was taken in a patrol vehicle to\u00a0Houston Northeast Hospital, then transferred to\u00a0Memorial Hermann\u2019s surgical trauma center in downtown Houston with non-life-threatening injuries. <\/p>\n
In an update on Saturday, Precinct 4 said Zepeda\u2019s surgery was successful, and he on the road to a full recovery.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease continue to keep Deputy Zepeda, his family, and our law enforcement family in your prayers as he continues to heal,\u201d Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman\u00a0said.<\/p>\n
The second deputy stayed on the perimeter until SWAT arrived, Precinct 4 said, and was later treated and released.<\/p>\n
SWAT responded after the suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment, officials said. Precinct 4 said SWAT breached the door, used technology to locate the suspect inside, and deployed\u00a0CS gas. The suspect later exited the apartment and surrendered.<\/p>\n
Authorities said the 38-year-old suspect has\u00a0not yet been identified\u00a0and is in custody at a local hospital for treatment of a\u00a0police K-9 bite. The\u00a0District Attorney\u2019s Office has accepted a charge of aggravated assault on a police officer, pending the suspect\u2019s release, officials said.<\/p>\n
No other residents or bystanders were reported injured. Residents were asked to avoid the area while investigators continued processing the scene.<\/p>\n
