After being named among the most charming small towns<\/a> in the United States by National Geographic this past spring,\u00a0Fredericksburg is already seeing a new batch of summer tourists, eager to explore the city’s peak peach season treats while taking in a breezy stroll down the its European-inspired Main Street.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With the region seeing new crowds year-round, the growing Hill Country hotspot is used to the attention. Fredericksburg routinely appears on travel destination lists, both from everyday travel blogs and major publications. But the town’s lasting popularity doesn’t just come from its\u00a0obvious attractions \u2014 the wineries and the growing list of luxury amenities<\/a> coming soon.<\/p>\n

What all the travel experts seem\u00a0to agree on is that the real reason why\u00a0Fredericksburg is so popular, why it consistently tops other Texas getaways \u2014 even your “fave” \u00a0\u2014\u00a0 comes down to the city’s ability to maintain its unique, core identity, even with the exploding demands of its growing tourism scene.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Part of\u00a0Fredericksburg’s\u00a0 popularity is its uniquely strong connection to its German heritage. Founded in 1846 by German immigrants, the small town has managed to preserve the character that first made it a travel destination. From its wide array of German food options<\/a> to stunning Main Street shops to historic stone-cobbled buildings, the town feels almost like you’re back in the old country rather than the Lone Star State. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Then there’s the multi-million dollar wine scene<\/a>, which transformed the city into a popular destination for couples, bachelorette and girls’ trips, and all who enjoy the dozens of wineries and tasting rooms.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to the Fredericksburg Convention and Visitor Bureau’s most up-to-date annual tourism report, the city saw a whopping $175.3 million in direct travel spending and supported 1,200 local jobs in 2024.<\/p>\n

Gillespie County Economic Development Commission data, first shared with MySA in 2025, shows that the county’s tax base has almost tripled over the last 10 years, climbing from $3.5 billion in 2015 to $10.4 billion in 2025. Earnings from sales tax in Fredericksburg have also jumped, from $4.6 million in 2014 to $9.3 million in 2024.<\/p>\n

On top of all the city’s traditional attractions, tourists from Austin, San Antonio, Houston and Dallas can easily get away to the small town, thanks to its central location in the heart\u00a0of the Hill Country.
