Greg Abbott posted an update on X saying, \u201cTexas is working with the feds to fast-track a new sterile fly facility in Edinburg to combat screwworm.\u201d Abbott also said, \u201cOur current efforts are containing the spread. The new facility will end it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/new-world-screwworm-cases-rise-to-15-in-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ALSO | Number of New World Screwworm cases rises to 15 in U.S.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>New world screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae burrow into the living flesh of warm-blooded animals. The infestation can cause severe tissue damage and, in some cases, death.<\/p>\n<p>Animal shelters in Texas are beginning to worry about the growing parasite infestation, <a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/texas-shelters-warn-bans-and-vet-only-meds-could-force-euthanasia-in-screwworm-fight\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">including Austin Pets Alive!<\/a>, where CEO Dr. Ellen Jefferson said staff are taking extra precautions when animals arrive.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny dog that enters our shelter period, but especially if they look like this, we\u2019re going over them with a fine-tooth comb and looking for anything that might be a wound where a screwworm might have been able to gain access,\u201d Jefferson said.<\/p>\n<p>Comment with Bubbles<\/p>\n<p>BE THE FIRST TO COMMENT<\/p>\n<p>The most recent cases were confirmed over the weekend, with one in Crockett County on Saturday and two more in Edwards County on Sunday.
