The United States added 31 newly confirmed measles infections last week, bringing its total for the year to 2,104, according to the latest update<\/a> from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n The new cases bring the country closer to the 2,288 confirmed measles case reported for all of 2025. All but 11 of this year\u2019s cases were locally acquired, with the rest related to travel outside the country. A total of 30 outbreaks have been reported, with no new outbreaks since the previous CDC update. There were 48 outbreaks reported in 2025.<\/p>\n Of this year\u2019s measles cases, 21% are in children age 5 and under, and 51% involve kids aged 5 to 19. Six percent of patients have been hospitalized, compared with 11% in 2025. Among all measles patients, 93% are unvaccinated or have unknown vaccine status.\u00a0<\/p>\n Virginia adds 19 new cases<\/p>\n Among the current hot spots is Virginia, which now has 129 reported measles cases, up 19 from the previous week, according to the\u00a0Virginia Department of Health<\/a>. Most of the case are tied to an ongoing outbreak in Buckingham County\u00a0that began in May<\/a>. Virginia reported only five measles cases in 2025.<\/p>\n South Carolina continues to have the most cases this year, with 670, but the large outbreak in the Upstate region\u00a0is now over<\/a>. Utah is next, with 498 cases, up eight from the previous week, according to the CDC measles map (though the\u00a0Utah health department<\/a> lists 490 cases).\u00a0<\/p>\n Since June 20 of last year, when an outbreak began in under-vaccinated communities on the Utah-Arizona border, Utah has reported 680 measles cases across 22 of 29 counties. Although cases are slowing in the state, state epidemiologist Leisha Nolen, MD, PhD,\u00a0told the Associated Press<\/a> that she\u2019s worried they could easily pick up again.<\/p>\n \u201cWe just need those few cases to hit the wrong community and it could flare up really big again,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n Texas has reported the third most cases for 2026, with 182.
