Registration is open for the Texas Horticulture Opportunities Conference on July 13-14 in San Marcos, hosted by the\u00a0Texas A&M Department of Horticultural Sciences<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Texas A&M AgriLife<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The conference will be held at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Conference Center, 1001 E. McCarty Lane.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Registration is $45 per person, with a $5 discount per person in groups of two or more. High School and college students or Texas A&M AgriLife employees registration is $30 per person. Register online at\u00a0tx.ag\/TXHortConf<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Texas Horticulture Opportunities Conference is happening concurrently with the\u00a0Texas Pecan Growers Association<\/a>\u00a0annual conference and trade show. For more information about the TPGA conference, visit\u00a0tpga.org\/tpga-events\/<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Conference offers look at alternative crops\u00a0<\/p>\n

As the Texas population grows and spreads, opportunities for home and farm-based businesses in horticulture are sure to follow, said Amit Dhingra, Ph.D., professor and head, Department of Horticultural Sciences, Bryan-College Station.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The conference offers a program for new landowners seeking information about horticulture crops and entrepreneurial opportunities, as well as for current agricultural producers looking to diversify their operations by introducing new or alternative specialty horticulture crops.\u00a0<\/p>\n

July 13 topics and speakers\u00a0<\/p>\n

The program on July 13 will run from 1-5 p.m. and open with a welcome reception and trade show viewing, followed by the topics and speakers:\u00a0<\/p>\n

The support system for horticulture opportunities in Texas \u2013 Dhingra.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Horticulture: a growing opportunity \u2013 Jimmy Klepac, owner,\u00a0Klepac Greenhouses Inc., Blanco.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The day will adjourn at 5 p.m., with a Texas Pecan Growers Association\u00a0event at 6 p.m. for those who purchase a separate ticket.\u00a0<\/p>\n

July 14 topics and speakers\u00a0<\/p>\n

The program on July 14 will run from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., opening with remarks on pecans in Texas from Troy Swift, president of the Texas Pecan Growers Association. The day will feature the following topics and speakers:\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tree fruit growing and marketing \u2013 Tim Hartmann, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension statewide fruit specialist and assistant professor, Department of Horticultural Sciences,\u00a0Bryan-College\u00a0Station.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Berry growing and marketing \u2013 Stephen Janak, AgriLife Extension program specialist, Department of Horticultural Sciences, Hallettsville, and Dustin\u00a0LaBat, owner,\u00a0Specklebelly Farms, Weimar.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cut flower production and marketing \u2013 Nicole Wagner, Ph.D., associate professor, Department of Agricultural Sciences,\u00a0Texas State University, San Marcos.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vegetable production and marketing \u2013 Joe Masabni, Ph.D., AgriLife Extension vegetable specialist and professor, Department of Horticultural Sciences, and Nick Farmer, owner,\u00a0Gotham Greens, Seagoville.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vineyards and wineries \u2013 Michael Cook, AgriLife Extension viticulture program specialist, Denton, and Donna Patrick, co-owner,\u00a0Pollo Rosa Winery, Cleburne.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Christmas trees in Texas \u2013 Andrew King, Ph.D.,\u00a0Texas A&M AgriLife Research<\/a>\u00a0ornamental horticulturist and assistant professor, Department of Horticultural Sciences, Overton, and Damien Prause, owner,\u00a0The Old Time Christmas Tree Farm, Spring.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Breaks throughout the day will give attendees a chance to visit the Texas Pecan Growers Association trade show, and the conference will adjourn at 5:30 p.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n
