Instead, they would shift to code enforcement and new technology.

“We’re still going to do blocked sidewalks. We’re still going to do junked vehicles. We’re still going to do people parked illegally in ADA spots. We’re just going to do it a little differently,” Buxton said.

The proposal would impact eight parking division positions, though city leaders say only six are currently filled.

“Our number one goal right now is to make sure that all of those folks are placed with other departments,” Buxton said.

Some downtown business owners say removing meters could make visits easier for customers.

Sarah Flores, owner of Streat Corner Kitchen, said customers sometimes struggle with the current parking setup.

“There are some areas that are paid, areas that aren’t, sometimes the meters work, sometimes they don’t, and we run into issues where people are getting tickets right outside of the restaurant,” Flores said.

Flores said simplifying parking could help businesses.

“I think just having one area or one way where you know if you’re parking on the road you can park there and not get charged and not have to worry about the meters,” Flores said. “I think it’s gonna be really great for our restaurant and for other businesses downtown.”

Residents had mixed reactions to the proposal.

Amanda Breland said her first concern involved employees who could be affected.

“I think it’s unfortunate that they are going to cut the jobs,” Breland said.

After learning workers could be moved into other city departments, Breland said, “That is good news. That does make me feel better.”

Others welcomed the possibility of free parking.

“I think it’s great. Anything to save a buck,” Kelly Blanchette said.

John D. Garcia said he believes removing meters could help attract people downtown.

“We want to incentivize our local residents to come downtown and they need to find an easy parking space,” Garcia said.

City leaders stressed the proposal only impacts city-owned meter spaces and not privately operated lots.

“This doesn’t change anything with the privately owned parking lots,” Buxton said. “Those are still privately enforced.”

City Council is expected to consider a second reading next week before any changes move forward.

Council voted 7-1 just after 8PM Tuesday in favor of the mid-year budget adjustments with an amendment to remove $200k for Parking Improvement Fund.

A second vote will need to take place next week for the item to move forward.

Parking meters in Downtown, Uptown and North Beach could soon disappear as the City of Corpus Christi considers…

[14
124505,124506,4519,2347,3029,155,157,156,124504,123513,123515,98668
post-349200","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-corpus-christi","tag-budget-adjustment","tag-budget-adjustments","tag-city-council","tag-city-leaders","tag-city-of-corpus-christi","tag-corpus-christi","tag-corpus-christi-headlines","tag-corpus-christi-news","tag-jennifer-buxton","tag-parking-enforcement","tag-parking-meters","tag-sarah-flores
["GET
