What if the state of Texas were like a giant couch with $100 just waiting for you to find it?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>You could have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/business\/economy\/article\/stimulus-check-june-2026-tariff-refund-update-22285817.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">money owed to you<\/a>, and the state could be holding it until you claim it. But how would you know or where to begin looking?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Look no further than the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The comptroller&#8217;s office holds over $10 billion of dollars in unclaimed property as of late May,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mysanantonio.com\/news\/local\/article\/texas-unclaimed-money-22085233.php?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">MySA reported<\/a>. When banks, businesses and other entities cannot locate the rightful owners of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/business\/article\/tariff-refunds-consumers-companies-22254695.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">financial assets<\/a>, those funds are transferred to the state.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s how to find unclaimed property, what qualifies and what to watch out for.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the comptroller&#8217;s office, unclaimed property is cash or financial assets that the owner has abandonded for at least a year or more.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The comptroller&#8217;s website provides a list of what is considered unclaimed property:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yes, you&#8217;re allowed to file for unclaimed property on behalf of a parent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To do this, you must be designated as their legal representative, power of attorney or guardian.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses and government entities that conduct business in Texas are considered holders. Under Texas law, holders must file an annual unclaimed property report with the Texas comptroller\u2019s office. These reports are submitted electronically through their online reporting system.<\/p>\n<p>The comptroller\u2019s office doesn&#8217;t text or call requesting your online banking credentials, secure access code or any other personally identifiable information for any reason.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you get a call like this, just hang up. Do not give out any of your information.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas comptroller&#8217;s\u00a0office says claiming property for a deceased relative typically requires submitting a death certificate, the will or letters of testamentary, proof of the heir&#8217;s identity, and, in some cases, going through probate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Have you ever removed the cushions from your couch and lucked into some cash you weren&#8217;t expecting?
