That would have been the point that the region’s “water supply is 180 days away from not meeting demand,” according to an explainer on the city’s website. Reaching a Level 1 water emergency would have triggered mandatory water use reductions called “curtailment.”

Corpus Christi Water (CCW) customers would have been required to cut their water consumption by a minimum of 25%. The average single-family household would be limited to 6,000 gallons per month, while large-volume and wholesale customers would have been subject to varying limits, depending on the season. Using more water than allowed would result in surcharges.

<img alt="A Corpus Christi Water dashboard now indicates that the Coastal Bend will reach a Level 1 water emergency in September 2027. Previously, the region was expected to reach an emergency in December 2026. (Courtesy Corpus Christi Water)

How did the Level 1 water emergency get pushed back?

Earlier this year, the Coastal Bend’s largest reservoirs – Lake Corpus Christi and Choke Canyon Reservoir – had fallen to their lowest levels ever amid a historic, five-year-long drought. Three months ago, Lake Corpus Christi stood at just 9.1% of total capacity, according to Water Data for Texas. As of Wednesday, June 24, the recent rains had bumped the reservoir to 31.8%. Additionally, CCW has begun digging dozens of groundwater wells across the region, the first of which went online in April.

“The significant drivers of this are, of course, we have steady production from the Mary Rhodes Pipeline. We’re very fortunate not being curtailed from Lake Texana. … Additionally, we continue to see the benefits of our Nueces County well program,” CCW Chief Operating Officer Nick Winkelmann said.

The Corpus Christi water crisis is not over yet

However, Choke Canyon Reservoir – which is three times larger than Lake Corpus Christi – has seen a much more negligible increase in volume. Between March 24 and June 24, the reservoir has only risen by 0.8% to 8.7%. As a result, the two lakes stand at about 15% capacity combined, Winkelmann explained to the city council. And that, he said, warrants continued caution.

“This is not a point in time where we are to let up or to get comfortable. We must continue to execute our plan to diversify the water supply,” Winkelmann said.

Sign up for Afternoon Headlines, MySA’s free newsletter bringing you San Antonio’s top stories of the day.

This article originally published at New development pushes back Corpus Christi water emergency.

[14
7256,155,157,156,9871,124775,410,8280,41120,9872,2646
post-350047","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-corpus-christi","tag-coastal-bend","tag-corpus-christi","tag-corpus-christi-headlines","tag-corpus-christi-news","tag-lake-corpus-christi","tag-sources-of-water","tag-water","tag-water-consumption","tag-water-crisis","tag-water-emergency","tag-water-supply
["GET
