{"id":350179,"date":"2026-06-25T17:07:15","date_gmt":"2026-06-25T17:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/350179\/"},"modified":"2026-06-25T17:07:15","modified_gmt":"2026-06-25T17:07:15","slug":"universitys-clinical-research-receives-key-accreditation-news-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/350179\/","title":{"rendered":"University\u2019s Clinical Research Receives Key Accreditation &#8211; News Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThis is a meaningful milestone for UT Dallas,\u201d said Sanaz Okhovat, senior associate vice president for <a href=\"https:\/\/research.utdallas.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">research and innovation<\/a> and chief compliance officer. \u201cAAHRPP accreditation signals that our human research programs, with the oversight of the Office of Human Subjects Protections (OHSP), meet exacting standards for protecting participants and upholding research integrity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other academic institutions accredited in the state of Texas are UT Austin, Texas A&amp;M University and seven medical schools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/profiles.utdallas.edu\/warnerczyz\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Andrea Warner-Czyz<\/a>, associate professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/bbs.utdallas.edu\/departments\/speech-language-and-hearing\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">speech, language, and hearing<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/bbs.utdallas.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences<\/a>, is chair of UT Dallas\u2019 Committee on Research Involving Human Subjects \u2014 the University\u2019s Institutional Review Board, or IRB.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe IRB\u2019s mission is to ensure that scientists perform their research with every prudent safety measure,\u201d Warner-Czyz said. \u201cThis recognition reflects the commitment of UT Dallas faculty and staff to meet these lofty benchmarks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The accreditation informs potential research participants, as well as collaborating researchers and sponsors, that UT Dallas is committed to a high standard, Okhovat said. She credited Amanda Boone, director of clinical trials and human subjects protections, for leading the accreditation effort.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuilding to these standards strengthens our operations and earns the confidence of our research partners,\u201d Boone said.<\/p>\n<p>Okhovat said: \u201cGiven how few institutions pursue and achieve this, it is an important distinction, particularly as our research portfolio continues to grow and a foundation for growth. As we expand our clinical and translational research and our partnerships with industry sponsors, accreditation is the standard those partners expect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first accreditation renewal for UT Dallas will come in three years; reaccreditation is expected every five years after that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAAHRPP accreditation confirms our long-standing commitment to safeguarding the rights and well-being of research participants in our quest to transform lives with innovative discoveries,\u201d said\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/research.utdallas.edu\/about\/staff\/leadership\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Joseph Pancrazio<\/a>, UT Dallas vice president for\u00a0research and innovation\u00a0and professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/be.utdallas.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bioengineering<\/a>. \u201cThis achievement is the product of the OHSP staff\u2019s commitment, as well as the efforts of everyone involved in human research at UT Dallas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speech Technology Researcher Wins Honor for Scientific Achievement<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/chairs.utdallas.edu\/biographies\/dr-john-h-l-hansen\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. John H.L. Hansen<\/a>, professor of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ece.utdallas.edu\/undergraduate\/electrical-engineering\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electrical engineering<\/a>\u00a0and the Distinguished Chair in Telecommunications at The University of Texas at Dallas, has been selected to receive the 2026 International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) <a href=\"https:\/\/isca-speech.org\/Latest-News\/13594921\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Medal for Scientific Achievement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>ISCA is the main research community for the fields of speech communication and processing, related speech and language technologies, phonetics, and language. Established in 1989, the annual award honors an individual who has made extraordinary contributions to the field of speech communication science and technology.<\/p>\n<p>Hansen will be honored at Interspeech 2026, which will be held Sept. 27 through Oct. 1 in Sydney, Australia, where he will deliver the featured keynote speech.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/ECE-Faculty-26-1500-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-87153\"  \/><\/p>\n<p>Dr. John H.L. Hansen<\/p>\n<p>The ISCA Medal has been awarded to pioneers who established the field of speech processing, including Swedish researcher Gunnar Fant, a founding father of modern speech communication science and acoustics who taught at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden and received the first award. Recipients also have included Dr. Kenneth Stevens, professor emeritus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology who made foundational contributions to the understanding of human speech, acoustic phonetics and speech perception; Dr. James Flanagan, a leading researcher at AT&amp;T Bell Laboratories whose work paved the way for digital assistants; and Dr. Graeme Clark, laureate professor emeritus of The University of Melbourne and one of the three inventors of the cochlear implant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is extremely humbling to be selected as the recipient of the\u00a0ISCA Medal for Scientific Achievement. It\u2019s truly an amazing honor to be included in this prestigious group of innovators and scientists in the field,\u201d Hansen said. \u201cI owe much of my success to the many students I\u2019ve worked with and supervised over the years, as well as colleagues and collaborators.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hansen, a fellow of both ISCA and IEEE, is founder and director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/crss.utdallas.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Center for Robust Speech Systems<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/engineering.utdallas.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Erik Jonsson School of Engineering and Computer Science<\/a>. He received the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.utdallas.edu\/campus-community\/accolades-april-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ISCA Service Medal<\/a> in 2025, and the IEEE Signal Processing Society Leo Beranek Meritorious Service Award in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ece.utdallas.edu\/people\/tenure-system-faculty\/dinesh-bhatia\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Dinesh Bhatia<\/a> MS\u201987, PhD\u201990, professor and department head of <a href=\"https:\/\/ece.utdallas.edu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">electrical and computer engineering<\/a>, said the newest achievement\u00a0is \u201ca fitting recognition for Dr. Hansen\u2019s extraordinary career.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThrough groundbreaking research, visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to advancing knowledge, Dr. Hansen has helped shape modern speech and language technologies,\u201d Bhatia said. \u201cThis achievement brings great pride to the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and further highlights the global impact of research conducted at UT Dallas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Accolades is an occasional News Center feature that highlights recent accomplishments of The University of Texas at Dallas faculty, students and staff.
