{"id":351041,"date":"2026-06-26T04:48:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-26T04:48:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/351041\/"},"modified":"2026-06-26T04:48:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-26T04:48:10","slug":"texas-is-poised-to-require-millions-of-students-to-study-bible-stories","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/351041\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas is poised to require millions of students to study Bible stories"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3yned000x28p3c4kacsev@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Texas is on the verge of mandating more than 5 million of its public school students to study Bible stories, as the state emerges as a leader in a national conservative effort to infuse Christian teachings into American classrooms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3z8xo00033b6r5dtbkiol@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The majority-Republican Texas State Board of Education is expected to vote Friday to pass a measure that would establish Biblical children\u2019s stories and Bible verses as required reading in its K-12 curriculum.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3z8xo00043b6rmrkqjan5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many of its students are already familiar with at least some Christian teachings: Texas last year <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/texas-ten-commandments-law-public-schools-scotus-43e679cf473e6b98b091d575578824eb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">became the largest state<\/a> to require classrooms to display the Ten Commandments, a law recently upheld in federal court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3z8xo00053b6raf92wmed@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The new list of required titles would include a picture-book adaptation of the David and Goliath story for elementary students and Bible passages about Adam and Eve for older students, among other references.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3z8xo00063b6r5guyg2o9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the same meeting, the school board will take up a vote to rewrite the state\u2019s social studies curriculum, focusing more on Texas and US history and deemphasizing some teachings about global history and cultures. The change would eliminate a sixth grade \u201cWorld Cultures\u201d course and significantly expand lessons on communism.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3z8xo00073b6rlfum7u36@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The proposals, which would go into effect in 2030, have sharply divided teachers, parents and community members \u2014 hundreds of whom appeared before the school board this week to voice their concern and enthusiasm.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3z8xo00083b6r8odtkrc2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Supporters argue the Bible should be studied as an essential literary text that can help students understand Western history and the founding of the US. One policy group has celebrated it as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texaspolicy.com\/multimedia\/article\/the-final-battle-for-new-history-curriculum-in-texas-fast-facts\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the \u201cfinal battle\u201d<\/a> in an effort to purge Texas schools of lessons on race and history that they say divides students and criticizes America\u2019s founders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3z8xo00093b6rrp4wb8hj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, those who oppose the changes say the mandatory reading list favors Christianity over other religions and violates the constitutionally protected separation between church and state. The teachings may also infringe on parents\u2019 ability to lead their children\u2019s religious education, they say, particularly in non-Christian households.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/c-gettyimages-2272798124.jpg\" alt=\"A copy of the Ten Commandments is displayed in a classroom at Bagdad Elementary School in Leander, Texas, on November 19, 2025.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1651\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3znub000e3b6ry5ux4dw9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In recent years, Texas leaders have broadly eliminated studies of racial and cultural diversity while expanding the schools\u2019 abilities to introduce Christianity to students.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3zwbw000g3b6r9paonnjl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2023, the state became the first to allow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/05\/25\/us\/texas-bill-chaplains-in-schools\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">chaplains to counsel students<\/a>, and the following year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/11\/22\/us\/texas-school-bible-curriculum-vote\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">approved a measure<\/a> that offered more funding to schools that teach an optional Bible-infused elementary school curriculum. The <a href=\"https:\/\/statutes.capitol.texas.gov\/?tab=1&amp;code=ED&amp;chapter=ED.28&amp;artSec=28.002\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">state\u2019s education code<\/a> already requires K-12 schools to teach \u201creligious literature, including the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) and New Testament, and its impact on history and literature.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3zwbw000h3b6r5whwc8cy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As students learn US history, supporters of the proposed curriculum argue Christian texts should be inseparable from lessons on the nation\u2019s founding.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3zwbw000i3b6ry1a8xrbk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe don\u2019t have to incorporate every religious belief in our history or in our literary works, because our nation was founded on Judeo-Christian values,\u201d said Susan Perez, founder of a Christian parent advocacy group, Citizens for Education Reform, in a school board meeting Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3zwbw000j3b6rmti6b0zr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perez pointed out Christian references in the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, which was signed in \u201cthe Year of Our Lord\u201d 1787.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3zwbx000k3b6rzia5pwzc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If passed, second-grade students would be taught the story, \u201cROAR! \u2013 Daniel and the Lion\u2019s Den.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3zwbx000l3b6r3imw5oxd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As students become more advanced in reading level, they would be introduced to passages directly from the Bible. Sixth-grade students would learn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kingjamesbibleonline.org\/Psalms-Chapter-23\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cThe Shepherd\u2019s Psalm\u201d from the Book of Psalms<\/a> alongside religious writings from George Washington and poems by Langston Hughes and Robert Frost.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3zwbx000m3b6rzg9t7w69@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Several community members have expressed concerns the plan would infringe on their autonomy as parents to oversee their children\u2019s religious education.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3zwbx000n3b6rdpvg3dhj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kimmie Fink, the mother of an active-duty military family stationed in Texas, told the board, \u201cI would like to believe that my children\u2019s constitutionally guaranteed religious freedom rights will remain intact wherever we are stationed.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3zwbx000o3b6rj3lzlh1l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIs this not the case in Texas, a state that champions parents\u2019 rights? In Texas, parents have the fundamental legal right to direct the moral and religious upbringing of their children without state interference. The proposed literary works trample on this right,\u201d Fink added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3zwbx000p3b6rlbz4ihtf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some proponents of the curriculum changes dispute arguments that children will be explicitly taught religion, saying the Biblical passages and stories will be taught in the context of world history.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu3zwbx000q3b6rthyu3mhc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThey are being used as literary and historical content rather than religious instruction,\u201d former public school administrator Nancy Barker told the board. \u201cThe Bible references will provide students with the background knowledge you will need to understand the books, the speeches, poems and important documents that have shaped our civilization.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/c-gettyimages-2282950700.jpg\" alt=\"State Board of Education member Julie Pickren, right, questions Democratic State Rep. Clark said she and some of her Christian constituents believe \u201cBible lessons should be taught on Sundays.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu40f8i000w3b6r4ulqpwkh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNot all of us believe the same,\u201d Clark said, noting that Christian denominations reference different translations of the Bible and at times differ in their interpretations.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu4jcgf00163b6r6frqqxmr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The proposed curriculum mandates specific Bible translations, including the King James Bible, which is widely used by Protestant and Evangelical churches but is avoided by the Roman Catholic Church.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu40f8i000x3b6rpmsk8h4b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Clark also says she fears the emphasis on Christian texts would alienate children who come from other religious backgrounds and prevent their parents from solely shaping their religious education. About a third of adults in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/religious-landscape-study\/state\/texas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Texas identify as non-Christian<\/a>, according to Pew Research Center surveys from 2023-2024.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu40f8i000y3b6rsalj7h69@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though parents would have the option to opt their children out of some of the required teachings, Clark said, missing lessons could impact students\u2019 test scores. Because the texts would be part of the curriculum, they could be included on standardized testing, potentially impacting the school district\u2019s test record if students do not perform well.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu6jgb300003b6rn0um4rfh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            One mother who spoke before the school board Monday in support of the proposal said she believes Texas has always stood for \u201cgiving our kids the knowledge they need to succeed.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu6jk8e00023b6r0v8jtfu0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cKeeping biblical references in our social studies standards isn\u2019t about pushing my religion, it\u2019s about giving our students a complete education here and making sure they understand the history,\u201d the mother said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu40f8i000z3b6re8jz0bds@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, teachers may be put in a position to teach religious texts they are not familiar or comfortable with, said Rabbi Joshua Fixler with Congregation Emanu El in Houston.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu40f8i00103b6r3qway29z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis list is full of Christian texts that are inappropriate for public school classrooms. As a rabbi and a parent of Jewish kids, I think it is vital that this board make a distinction between teaching about religion and teaching religion. This list will force teachers to cross that line,\u201d Fixler said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu40f8i00113b6r9g5x6ik9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If put into effect, the mandated literature curriculum could be a first of its kind, according to Antero Garcia, president of the National Council of Teachers of English and a Stanford University education professor.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmqu40f8i00123b6rfqrftixs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Garcia told The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/texas-curriculum-bible-board-vote-06530403ff91c10462382422003e109f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Associated Press<\/a> he doesn\u2019t know of any other state with a similar list.
