Gibson arrived in Austin with high expectations as a consensus four-star prospect ranked as the No. 117 player nationally and the No. 9 running back, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings. The Gainesville product finished his high school career at IMG Academy in Bradenton before signing with Texas in the 2024 recruiting class despite a late push by Florida.<\/p>\n
As a true freshman, Gibson took advantage of injuries at the running back position to make an impact during non-conference play, scoring touchdowns against Colorado State, Michigan, and Louisiana-Monroe in addition to running for 75 yards on five carries in the win over UTSA. Gibson also recorded his first career 100-yard performance in the blowout victory against his hometown Gators, finishing the 2024 season with 78 carries for 377 yards and four touchdowns.<\/p>\n
But Gibson also struggled with fumbles, losing the ball three times, including the Florida game, an issue that continued into the 2025 season when he faced increasing competition after the returns of redshirt sophomore CJ Baxter and redshirt freshman Christian Clark from season-ending injuries sustained last year.<\/p>\n
Even before in his season debut against San Jose State, which featured another fumble, Gibson had lost ground to Clark and only received one carry in the win over Oklahoma, a three-yard loss, as freshman James Simon moved ahead of him in the rotation.<\/p>\n
Before leaving the program, Gibson did not see playing time against Ohio State or Florida, finishing his Texas career with 37 carries for 152 yards and a touchdown in 2025.<\/p>\n
\u201cJerrick is our short-yardage back and we just didn\u2019t have any short-yardage opportunities, first of all, so he would have been the first guy in if that would have been called upon,\u201d Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said last Thursday.<\/p>\n
Sarkisian went on to say that Texas needed to use its backs who are stronger in pass protection and pass catching, two knocks on Gibson in addition to issues missing holes earlier in the season.<\/p>\n
