LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Lubbock Bail Bond is warning residents that scammers are posing as the company and targeting families, demanding money to get loved ones out of jail.<\/p>\n
Lacausha Johnson, manager of Lubbock Bail Bond, said at least $5,000 was lost by victims who came into her office in the past week alone, believing they had paid the company to secure a release.<\/p>\n
\u201cOver the past week alone, I\u2019ve had a total, I\u2019m assuming, at least $5,000 from those who\u2019ve come into my office saying \u2018you got my person out, I sent you this amount of money, why are they still in jail?\u2019\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n
Johnson said Lubbock Bail Bond does not make outbound calls to potential clients.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou call us, we never call you. We never know if your family member is in jail, we don\u2019t know you from a hole in the ground, so with that being said, how do I know your telephone number? How do I know that you are grandma? That I don\u2019t know,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Scammers are also requesting payments through electronic apps, which Johnson said the company does not accept.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a bonding company, we never accept payments from CashApp, Venmo, any electronic payment that way. We\u2019re simple, we\u2019re old school. We\u2019re either cash, check, credit card or a certified check,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
A look-alike website is also claiming to be Lubbock Bail Bond. Johnson said the site is not affiliated with the company. The official Lubbock Bail Bond website includes a message at the top warning visitors about the scam.<\/p>\n
Johnson urged anyone who receives an unsolicited call regarding bond services to not transfer money. She said if a person has not dealt with the company in person or contacted them directly first, the caller is most likely a scammer.<\/p>\n
Johnson said informing victims they have been defrauded is the most difficult part of the situation.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s emotionally draining. They\u2019re taking people\u2019s hard earned money and they\u2019re assuming they\u2019re getting the services that they\u2019re paying for, and they\u2019re not,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Anyone who believes they are being scammed should hang up, call the company directly using a number they find on their own, and report the incident to police.<\/p>\n
