{"id":354407,"date":"2026-06-29T14:13:10","date_gmt":"2026-06-29T14:13:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/354407\/"},"modified":"2026-06-29T14:13:10","modified_gmt":"2026-06-29T14:13:10","slug":"texas-board-approves-bible-texts-in-public-school-standards-allows-opt-outs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/354407\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas board approves Bible texts in public school standards, allows opt-outs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>AUSTIN, Texas \u2014 Texas public school students could soon be required to read Bible passages in class under new curriculum standards <a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/texas-education-board-approves-new-standards-adds-bible-passages-to-required-reading-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">approved Friday<\/a> by the State Board of Education, a move that drew mixed reactions from parents.<\/p>\n<p>The standards include a required K-12 reading list that features biblical texts such as \u201cJonah and the Whale\u201d and \u201cDavid and Goliath.\u201d Parents will have the option to temporarily remove their child from those lessons, but school districts will not be required to provide an alternative assignment.<\/p>\n<p>Some parents said they support the readings and do not plan to opt their children out.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s time we start talking about the Spirit and the spiritual realm in school,\u201d said Paula Thomas, a parent in San Marcos.<\/p>\n<p>Alexis Burnett, a parent in North Austin, said, \u201cI think it\u2019s a really good idea and opportunity for the kids to learn that because when they get older they\u2019re not going to know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cbsaustin.com\/news\/local\/texas-education-board-approves-new-standards-adds-bible-passages-to-required-reading-list\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">PREVIOUS COVERAGE | Texas education board approves new standards, adds Bible passages to required reading list<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Burnett added, \u201cI want them to learn as much as possible in school. Especially if it\u2019s about the Bible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thomas said, \u201cI\u2019m a Christian myself, so I think the Bible stories have a great effect on a child and their behavior.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other parents, speaking off camera, said they oppose the standards and believe Bible passages should not be taught in public schools.<\/p>\n<p>Andrew Freeman, Media and Communications coordinator for the Texas Freedom Network, criticized the reading list, saying, \u201cTo look at this reading list which has more than a dozen biblically associated stories.
