CANUTILLO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 While summer break is underway, schools across the region are recognizing educators who made a lasting impact during the academic year. <\/p>\n

At Canutillo Independent School District, one middle school teacher is being honored for her commitment to helping students build healthy, active lifestyles.<\/p>\n

Karly Dreher, a physical education coach at Canutillo Middle School, was named Canutillo ISD’s Secondary Teacher of the Year for her dedication to students and her passion for physical education.<\/p>\n

Dreher has spent 16 years in education. She began her career teaching social studies nine years before moving into health education and eventually physical education. She is now entering her fourth year as a P.E. teacher at Canutillo Middle School.<\/p>\n

Receiving district-wide recognition was both exciting and humbling, Dreher said. This year, both Canutillo teachers of the year are P.E teachers.<\/p>\n

“It’s a little overwhelming but very exciting,” she said.<\/p>\n

“I’m very proud that two P.E. teachers were recognized in our district, which is very rare. I take it as appreciation for physical literacy and kind of puts us in the same realm as the other important academic subjects.”<\/p>\n

Students say Dreher’s classes stand out because she makes physical activity enjoyable while encouraging them to stay healthy.<\/p>\n

“She does this thing where we play games and do exercises to get strong,” one student said.<\/p>\n

Another student, Isaac Rodriguez, praised Dreher’s teaching style.<\/p>\n

“I love how she is super nice, and she’s not super strict with us,” Rodriguez said. “She has fun activities for us to do.”<\/p>\n

For Dreher, the goal extends beyond the gymnasium. She hopes her students develop habits that will benefit them throughout their lives.<\/p>\n

“I would tell my students to stay active, stay in sports, go on a walk with the dog,” Dreher said. “Make sure they are going outside, put down the technology, and be themselves.”<\/p>\n

As students enjoy their summer vacation, Dreher hopes the lessons learned in her class will encourage them to remain active and healthy long after they leave middle school.<\/p>\n
